Scimitar SE6 Trackday car from France

Post by Zimzum » Fri Sep 14, 2018 10:02 am

Hello from France!

We are 3 owners of this car some of you might know!
Among us are owners of Caterham, Alfa Romeo, Lotus Elise, Ginettas, TVR etc...
We were looking for a vintage car which could be driven on track, at a very affordable price.
Aymeric already bought a SE5, and we thought this SE6 was a good buy as its chassis was already prepared to go on the track. Roll bar, adjustable suspension , electric cut off switch etc... The engine is a stock Gilbern 3.0 Essex.
The car used to run with a prepared Essex, a Rover V8 and a Cossworth V6...

We went to see the car in the UK, and drove it back to France under the rain, hence the aluminum tape to cover the vents on the hood. That could have caused serious electrical problems under heavy rain!

The car needed a first service before its first trackday in France, and we replaced all the coolant hoses, fixed the brakes and ball joints, fitted a passenger seat and harness etc...
We wanted to have a first glance at how the car behaves in its current condition.
The chassis was really fine, except an offseted steering wheel.
But the engine shown a real weakness in lubrication as the oil pressure was falling dangerously low in right hand cornering.

The engine is now being rebuilt, and we will have few questions for you as it's our first rebuild!

Scimitar SE6 Trackday car from France

Post by scimjim » Fri Sep 14, 2018 11:57 am

Welcome :-)

The car was known as Champagne Charlie when it was owned by the RSSOC ex-Chairman, Jerry Ree. Later owned by Team Carter (who removed the Essex and fitted the 2.9i IIRC) - looks like someone just dropped a standard engine in to sell it?

Before you finish the engine make sure you baffle the sump or you will be rebuilding it again

Thanks for the information.

We are looking for information about baffling the sump. Is it possible to buy baffled sumps or should it require working on this one?

Welcome indeed, felicitations on your purchase - and on your english!

Now it seems it is the turn of Scimitar race cars to emigrate, we already have the ex-Howard Nelson car over here

That seems to sit the road nicely, but it would if family Carter set it up.
I see you have already registered the car in France.
Where was the track day - looks almost like Curborough !
Keep posting your progress ...

Here's the other one belonging to Jean-Marie Jeanne

Scimitar SE6 Trackday car from France

Oh yes this blue one looks great!

We have difficulties to remove the camshaft.
We removed the locking plats, but the camshaft won't slide out.
Are the 2 bolts (red arrows) used for locking the camshaft?
Any advice to remove it?
Thanks!

No, those two “bolts” are oilway plugs I think. If you have all of the followers removed, the cam should slide out when you remove the front thrust plate.

Is there a clip ? Because the camshaft will slide on 0.5cm and then seems stopped by something...

Locking wire - hook the hole in the top.

Definitely the followers, they will have to come out first. Jim's suggestion is good, I simply stuck my finger in the top of them. They should slide out, if they stick they have a ridge worn on them.
