Coupe for Sale SRE 353G

Post by Nick » Sat Apr 07, 2018 3:43 pm

I am considering selling my well known Coupe.

This car has a very interesting and well documented history. Originally supplied to the then Chairman of the MSA, Dean Delamont, the car was modified by Fords Boreham Competitions Department and Weslake to give about 140 bhp at the wheels. The rest of the car was suitably modified to reflect the performance with larger Revolution wheels, an LSD and uprated suspension. The car has subsequently only had 3 more owners including myself in 50 years. All the past 3 owners have used the car in completion.

I will only give a brief summary of the car, but can provide far more details to seriously interested parties.

The balanced engine revs very freely, and is in good condition using no oil or leaks. Recently the heads have been re-built with new valve guides and an alloy radiator installed. Fitted with the rare Weber 40 DFI5 carb and Lumenition ignition the engine is very smooth

The overdrive gearbox was extensively re-built last year and benefits from the higher ration Capri second gear, and new selector bushes. The LSD works well, but whines a little.<br/>

Chassis is in good condition being regularly waxoyld, minor repairs being completed as necessary. Suspension and brakes are good. A new battery and fuel pump just fitted

The body is in excellent condition having a quality re-spray by Dave Speed just over 2 years ago in BMW Estoril blue which suits the car very well. All trim is original in good condition. As can be clearly seen in the past the rear arches have been flared, and front headlamp covers fitted. This work was well done and I think enhances the car.

The interior is generally good and original, could do with a set of carpets. Currently fitted with a competition seat the original is available.

There is a problem. The car currently has a misfire when hot that I am struggling to solve.

For personal reasons it currently suits me to sell the car, but at this stage I am only putting it on the Club site.

I find pricing difficult. I do not have to sell the car and will not do so unless the circumstances are right. I think running properly and with new carpets the car is worth about £10 k. Recognising the work to be done I am thinking of 7.5 to 8K.

The car is an exellent cruiser, gearing remaining original with good sound proofing, it also makes a good light competition car being eligible for Classic Marques, SSSC. and the Prescott Alden class. I have a roll bar that could be fitted, also a 38DGAS carb.

Seriously interested parties can contact me here or by phone on 01527 63786. If not sold within a couple of weeks I will keep the car and solve the problem.

Sod's law that I see a desirable car at a good price about once every two years but never seem to be in a position to follow through and buy it.
Two months ago I would have snapped this up,but my current medical problems dictate against this.
It should sell quickly, but please don't sell it to a dealer because he will just fit carpets, etc. and put it up for sale at £15k
Nice to see you have an MR2 mk2,really a nice sports car and very underrated, perhaps because they used to be such a common sight.
Good Luck.

It's a stunning car, how can you bear to sell it? :o

You've obviously loved it and Graham and Trevor were very caring previous owners. If I hadn't just spent £too much! on my Coupe rebuild I'd be very interested. It will be a great buy for someone.

What a lovely car wish I had the money available at the moment to buy this. As for the misfire I had similar issues and it was the Luminition overheating. I ended up removing it from my car and replacing with old fashioned points and condensor and it cured the fault.
Good luck with the sale :D

The ones on Nick's car were made by Les Trafford and fitted by Terry Cox many years ago. Les bent them in Don Pither's oven! I'm not aware of anyone who can still supply them.

I bought a pair from Don before he sold up and they have been safely stashed away for fitting as soon as my (very protracted) Coupe rebuild is completed. :D

I think Dave Speed did look at the possibility of making some more but the variance in Coupe nose profiles made it either difficult or impossible to make a “standard” profile?

Hi Nick,
Absolutely love this car! When Trevor had it, I was entrusted with it to drive at the Coupe anniversary photo shoot at Curbs. Fantastic engine and a pleasure to drive. Good luck with the sale! :D

several people have tried and failed, I have a set that was used as a template several times.... the availability of "see through" plastic products may have changed over the years making them easier to make.... I like the look of them myself so hope some one masters it.

Good luck but don't make too many. I quite like the thought of it being an unusual mod.

I think part of the problem is that they're asymmetrical so are time-consuming to produce and get spot on, especially if the nose profile differs. I think Les' words when he finished his first, and only, batch were, "Never again!". :)
