Harpboys Black Beauty Body Off Chassis Rebuild

Post by Harpboy » Wed Apr 13, 2011 9:34 pm

Hi Guys,

Finally going to give an account of the Black Beauty chassis rebuild. Not sure if picture will load up but here goes:
Before01.jpg
Before - reasonable n tidy but doing pre-MOT checks.....
Thats the wife in the background assuring our neighbour that he wont be long

Just another pic so i can remember what i had before i started
Before02.jpg
Forgive them for they know not what they do....
These were taken on the 10th of October 2009 and i hadn't used the car for around 3 months and thought well, a few check here and there, replace a few niggly bits and it should pass the MOT. I had done 6000 miles prior to putting it on a SORN and it was running quite well. I had the opportunity to do some refurbing of the trailing arms whilst adjusting the handbrake cables - after prodding the hangers on the axle i felt confident a clean and scrape of the chassis hangers would reveal the same but to no avail - screwdriver disappeared and upon closer inspection it wasn't looking good. Couldn't see an easy fix and i didn't want to cut the body as was suggested so i did the necessary after some serious planning and made the start on the body off

Right this shows the initial dismantle
NEC2010 032.jpg
Bumper off
Not an easy job whichever way you lookat it as the old fastners had badly corroded so you always hope they will break when pressure is applied and viryually all did - it helped that the bumper had been taken off before so progress was made

The Scimmy had had a nudge on the rear at some stage and the brunt of this had been absorbed by the towing bracket. I had a refurbished towing bracket and linkages ready to go when resto completed - electrics were a pain and removed immediately so that all that remained was the scimmy loom and i have since tidied this ready for the new electrics to go back in.

Now all this was happening around the beginning of January 2010 and i had high hopes of a summer re-build but best laid plans and all of that (kids and wife to accomodate plus lack of funds etc)

So the front bumper was removed - again not too bad because i had already overhauled all of the front bumper support and spare wheel tray etc so made good progress here.
NEC2010 034.jpg
Grrr...i will bite you
Don't they remind you of a shark from the front without the bumpers on or is it just me

Anyhow the rear bolts were A PAIN as they were badly corroded and difficult to get to behind the heater blowers which have to come out. They were a pain too because they had been fixed with sicaflex or similar and took some prising away from the fibreglass. One disintegrated on contact - good job i had several spares and i will show their overhaul later.

Those of you with a sharp eye will notice how they grass gets longer and longer.....

Right those pics seem OK, i will carry on posting as and when and bring you up to speed as i'm currently workin flat out to get a late summer ticket. Me and MikeT want a side by side photo outside a country pub after a nice long drive with a bit of heat on our backs and contented wives chatting in the background about the length of time it took to get the windows cleaned and the garden tidied

Seriously i want to thank Mike for his help and enthusiasm - having him around spurs me on and i think he feels the same when he comes round. BTW what a nice car his is turning out to be - after some serious winter work it sounds beautiful and looks great. Keep up the good work mate.

Steve

Going to upload plenty of pics for referencing as i've got gone quite a distance with this now :)

Worst part is the lower mounts, bitch to get into. Helps if you just cut away the steel outrigger and the cut the heads off the bolts with a thin disc. You may as well resign yourself to replacing the outriggers - foolish not to.

With two of you its quite easy as one can check if anything is catching or still attached - easy done, but Mike made the checks as i raised the engine hoist.
I gave Mike the camera and he went into David Bailey mode, a very good idea though  BTW i love my very quick brake lines the garage did for me - very wonky donkey

And so it continues...29th January 2010 body off and resting on axle stands. Here we start examining just how bad or not the chassis is. I have to say that i was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Key point were good, and i had proposed to bin the outriggers and cross members, seat supports etc anyhow. I started to wire brush the chassis and prod with a screw driver to check strength.

The rear trailing arm hangers on the drivers side were shot - some repairs coud have been done in-situ but better to get the lot done for another 40 years!
