Just got some nice parcels - flexi turbo cooling hoses from Japan (just 3 days!), door and top-of-windscreen rubber from Woolies and shiny intercooler kit (pity it'll be hidden!). Hopefully that'll get me going again!

We like shiny bits! Any more thoughts on exhaust routing?

Well had big reorg at work end 2012 and my job was axed. Good part was that I got temporary position until retirement at 65 in November, and being "non-active" since Aug 1. Well 90% non active. That meant I relaxed on project and have done almost nothing except polish the car ( Dutch Cheshire?) to preserve paintwork and now house/garden renovation has taken over...lost 4 kg hacking out great clumps of bamboo...Then had to attend to family problem in UK.

I'm still stuck with deciding on mods to ex manifold and position of turbo and exhaust. Thinking of moving turbo forwards by adding plates to manifold after cutting manifold turbo mount off...thereby giving more room for exhaust...(That's a problem I have - spend too much time thinking/worrying rather than acting).

Haven't done anything more to engine after seeing no compression (will fill cyls with diesel at some point and see if its a case of stuck rings) otherwise it'll be a rebuild with 84 mm forged pistons and rods at present in attic. Will probably go for a G4 ECU although have Apexi Neo and all other bits too - they could be better used on road car - again lack of focus means no advances.

Probably my biggest problem is that my silver daily driver SS1 will always be the "favorite" due to emotional reasons and its wonderful condition. And, while you can do "no expense spared " on one car, that doesn't fly with two. Which car gets/keeps the Stinger DSI for example?

I'll get there one day, probably backwards!

Glad to hear the projects still going strong, and hopefully you will have a bit more time to play too soon.

Re the turbo positioning, you could try one of the DET aftermarket top mount turbos that mount the turbo centrally and the fit the turbo facing back to front, with the exh going 180deg?
Im thinking of doing it on the racer build

That makes for very long inlet air tubes, thereby increasing lag unless going for chargecooler, So i'll be sticking with conventional set-up for now

Re: E150 UOL rebuild - Intercooler

Post by td99 » Thu Oct 10, 2013 8:27 pm

Decided to take a few hours off from house/garden and mocked up intercooler with a view to fitting to daily SS1.
Requires 90 degree bends laterally and then rearwards, within a space of 15 cm laterally and vertically to go around.
Probably better to remove the lower 3 layers from the intercooler to allow silicone coupling rather than welding direct....

Without much ((none  ) planning I attacked a 90 degree bend with angry grinder with a view to making it incorporate the second 90 degree bend like a concertina...with the idea of welding up once bent...

Grinder was too angry and pipe fell apart  After that I realized that just cutting such incisions wasn't going to work and required excessive welding (and gas, no wonder it's called " Ar've gone"). Finally realized need to cut out wedge shaped sections, but even then difficult to get the pipe to end up where it should. Talk about a pig's ear! Well it was instructive to say the least!

Next thought is that 2.5 in piping is overdone (too big a volume leading to lag) and better to use 2 inch Ali piping, which is readily available at local scrap metal merchants for 2 euro/kg.

Now somebody tell me I can get custom silicone piping (bends) at reasonable prices - sure I remember a reference to that???

Cut down the intercooler this evening, intending to fit it to my daily driver ( ah, now I realize why people give names to their cars, so much easier...). This time the aluminium welding went a bit more neatly :)

I have Batmobiles ally intercooler going spare if you need one for the DET car TD.
Im going to run a chargecooler so i can run the engine water rad in the front and the charge cooler rad in the boot of new build, so i just cant get the IC and water rads in the front and keep the weight where i want it

Thanks Craig, but I think it's a bit larger than I want. Also best that I evaluate the one going onto the standard car first. Piping is quite long when mounted at front.
