71 GTE SE5A my rolling restoration

If they're like the earlier SE5 one they go the consistency of liquorice which causes clattering - especially on an uphill take-off....Back light could be an oxidised bullet connector but, as you say, most likely an earth..........But am sure all is resolved by now?

71 GTE SE5A my rolling restoration

Post by CarlosVanDango » Fri Aug 23, 2019 9:34 pm

Decided to go a slightly different direction with this - i'm getting rid of the V6 essex and fitting another engine. TBH i've been thinking a while the V6 isn't economical for what i want (a daily driver) i did have this in mind when i bought it but since i got the V6 running i've been enjoying the car but now decided to go for the swap.
the engine i'm going for isn't to everyones taste but it ticks a lot of boxes .............. a VW 1.9tdi

got hold of a golf GTtdi

so far i've pulled out the engine wiring loom and labelled it up

just need to pull out the relevant wires from inside and i should be good to get it going.

i'll keep the thread updated and if anyone wants any info just ask :D

Loz fitted that engine to a MR2, project thread on here somewhere. Might give some insight into the wiring.

also fitted a couple of front seats, wasn't too keen on the originals. i got given these for free, they are from an astra coupe - they just about fit in maybe a bit too high but quite comfortable, also when you recline the back forward they slide forward too, so it's dead easy to get in the back :D

71 GTE SE5A my rolling restoration and now Tdi conversion

Post by CarlosVanDango » Thu Sep 05, 2019 10:57 pm

made a start on the gearbox adapter plate i'm planning on using a mazda RX8 gearbox and you can't buy an adapter plate for them so i'm going to have to make one, measured it all up and seems to work - just need to sort a clutch plate but apart from that it looks good.

also the front seats i fitted were too high so i lowered the bracket to give an extra inch but was still a bit tight so i've fitted a smaller steering wheel, i was saving this until i'd finished the pas conversion but it will have to go on now, luckily i had an old boss that was same splines as the scimitar.

Would a Volvo 740/940 diesel gearbox be an option? Should bolt on to the 1.9 block.

presumably you need the Getrag M90 from the 6 pot VW diesel in the Volvo D24?

What engine code is it out of interest? I've a few things left from my Octavia days. Think that was an AGR code engine with separate non VNT turbo.

I fitted a smaller wheel but I've now gone back to the original size as it was harder to steer. I have MGF power steering .you will need it with the smaller wheel.

not sure about this - i searched for ages for a box that would bolt up and couldn't find anything common that would, i did a conversion before on a mk1 transit using a crafter box but even that used an adaptor plate (from vw)
i'm too far down the road with the adaptor plate now anyway - i like the idea of making one as its something i've not done before

i'm surprised with the pas you didn't stick with the small wheel, i really like it much better over the original, but i have to keep it the original rubs on my legs now, it's ok once up and running but i could see how if i was parking a lot it would become a bit annoying, i have got all the bits for the mgf pas conversion just need to get round to fitting it
