Not yet, was on the cards for today to dig out my big one (steady!) And test for continuity. But instead real life, and repairing a very sickly iPhone 6s as a favour to someone sadly took president....

Should the ballast resistor get so hot that I'm teaching the surrounding area new and inventive swear words each time my hand makes contact with it? Part of me says no, but I'm not exactly familiar with auto electrics especially ones on classics...

Plan is to try and make some headway tomorrow after I finish work at 3....

The white bit is a ceramic simply because it does get hot - it’s designed to.

To confirm it’s fuse 12 (35A) see if you’ve got reverse lights. Check for power in and out on the fuse body, not the fuse box holder ears.

I was checking fuse 1....as that what one of my non reliant book said it was :? (Autobooks workshop manual)

Reverse lights are out ...multimeter and blue bible now going to be dug out at 3pm when I'm finished, as nipped back on break to let the dogs out (not that they wanted to in this rain!) And then if weather let's up enough, try and sort this wiring out

Which end? It's a good idea to do the whole fuse box. Don't rely on continuity tests, read the Voltage both sides of a fuse, on the fuse caps. Any missing Voltage, remove the fuse and give the caps a gentle pull. Retension the fuse clip ears when putting a good fuse in.

The fuse numbers in these read left to right so closest to the door.

Thanks for the tip with the holders I'll make sure each one gets a tiny pinch to just make sure they're not "too loose"

Progress into solving halted by big eff off storm coming in...

Fuse 11 (battery control 35 amp) literally annihilated clock back to life, but now tail lights out of action, and no change on the others, tested all fuses, all came back a ok except for 11...which was royally blown...

Cant find the blue bible as I've really kept it in a safe place so safe its eluding even me....

Tail lights
Headlights

the non functional list

All electrical gauges
Brake lights
Reverse lights
Indicators
Overdrive wasnt functional but hasn't yet been retested since a lot of bits sprang back to life

I've been looking at that wiring diagram and Peters got a green wire going from 24 on the fuse box to the Otter switch then black/yellow from Otter switch to fan then black to earth. That all sounds good except the colours are not right. This diagram is for a SE6a (marked as such bottom right). the car in question is an SE6.

There are a few colours wrong in the diagrams occasionally - just let Peter know and he will correct them (as long as you’re 100% sure they’re original). Unlikely to be any difference between 6 and 6a though.

Sorry Jim, referencing the brooklands books workshop manual again you kindly donated years ago when I had Link.

Ran tests along all the fuses and (numbering left to right) the last but one, had blown spectacularly, it must have popped recently as it was still warm in my hand when I picked it out. It had singed the paper inside the tube and had several small broken off sections floating around in there. Hoping to have another poke around later IF the weather holds....

Ah - I’m in deepest darkest Wales, so can’t cross reference the Brooklands manual. Are they still written on the outside of your fuse box cover?

If it’s blown spectacularly it sounds like a dead short to earth rather than a slow blow through heat/high resistance/etc.

If you look at the fuse box illustration and the fuse listing in the owners' handbook on Dave Poole's website here, and the wiring diagram on the last page, (both of which are, I believe, the same as in the "blue book"?), then there seems to be an ambiguity in the way the fuses are numbered in the list, and the way they are numbered in the illustration?
