Candy Capers - everyday life of an SE6A.

Post by Oldconn » Fri Aug 18, 2017 1:10 pm

Having just passed the French Controle Technique with only three little advisories :D ,it occurred to me that I have been driving this car for four years but have never started a thread for it. I hope this is the right section, if not could a nice Mod move it,please?
I bought this late SE6A in 2013 and imported it into France, hence the name "CandY" -her Regd.N° is CY-409-SG. I had retired several years before, and this is to be(probably) the last ever car I shall enjoy. She is now my everyday transport and she's coping with all my demands admirably . Only once has she failed to get me home, when a front wheel bearing melted and I nearly lost a front wheel. That's not to say we haven't had any problems (it's a Reliant!) , but we have covered a lot of miles. We have been to Lorraine many times, up to Holland pulling a trailer and then down to Lyon, over to Magny-Cours for the Classic Days weekend,to Switzerland for the Morges weekend, numerous one-day shows, several Historic hillclimbs, the English Rencart gathering at Nemours, and the Historic Tour of Laon and Picardie. I suppose I have had all the troubles which are common to the SE6 series, notably overheating, noisy back axle, noisy gearbox, pesky electrics, lousy handbrake; but frankly, they are all preventable and curable with regular diligent servicing and regular use, and so far I have been able to tackle everything myself. On the positive side it's fun to drive, a great long-legged cruiser, comfortable, useful for all sorts of tasks, and a good-looker. What more do you want from a 37-year-old ? (Be careful how you answer that  )
So, we start another five years of partnership (French Cars of Collection only have to pass a test every five years)looking forward to many more years on the road together.
The first hurdle, approaching fast,is going to be a full engine overhaul including new pistons -or maybe an exchange engine- but that's another chapter. I'll keep you posted!
Salut!
Ian Lambert.
P.S: What were the advisories? - One fog-lamp trained too high, one front suspension rubber bush torn, and a gearbox oil-leak. It's a Reliant!

Might I be so bold to ask you how much your test costs ? I still get mine for £30 but with four cars that's £120 every year. Got the MB and SS1 done twice to get them away from tests in Feb and March. Now tests are May, June, July and August

No secret, Peter, it's 65€. Every two years for ordinary cars, every five years for Collection cars; and diesels have to have the pollution checked evry year for a reduced sum. However, when the new rules come in next year, the price will go up too.

To keep up with modern developments, I've been thinking about DRLs for some time. I think they are a real aid to road safety, especially on dull, grey days when people career about in dark-coloured cars with no lights on. So here is Candy sporting her flashy new DRLs, correctly wired to come on with the ignition, and go off when using other lights:

Incidentally, our Drive-it Day is on Sunday 29 April, to co-incide with the National day of Patrimonie. We shall be joining the ARTS-70 club run out to the Jura , visiting Beaume-les-Dames and a Chateau , picnic lunch, etc. Pics to follow.

This is turning out to be more like an archaeological dig, finding treasure buried under centuries of muck! After a whole day removing the cast-iron manifolds, the inlet manifold was next and the first peek at the innards was something out of a horror movie!

With the heads removed, it became evn more apparent that this engine had been lying dormant for many, many years-

However, a good cleaning-up revealed that there is absolutely no wear in the bores; the pistons are virtually new; and the camshaft, tappets, pushrods, rockers, oil pump and bearing shells are immaculate!

An additional bonus point - this is not a sleeved engine. So with more cleaning, lapping-in of the valves, transfer a few nice bits from my existing engine, new bolts & screws, new clutch, new seals, and a coat of paint , I should end up with a really nice "nearly new" engine. Then I just have to organise the swap! :?

A bit more progress: the heads have been lightly skimmed, and the valve seats re-cut. All exhaust valves renewed.

That looks a bit prettier now! Won't the blue engine clash with the gold engine bay though?

You may be right, James. I bought a tin of engine paint expecting it to be dark blue, and it turned out to be light. I will probably use my grey rocker-covers to tone it down a bit; otherwise I will just have to keep the bonnet shut!
