Manny's 81 GTC

Post by manny » Tue Jul 04, 2017 6:20 am

Good day all,

deal was done yesterday-viewtopic.php?f=21&t=36560- with wife right next to me!! what a gal.
It should be arriving in a few months - whilst I get the Ti sorted, possibly moving the two GTEs on ( undecided) and making space for the TR.
Aiming to get down to three cars... TR, GTC and one SS1

Steve ( seller) - lovely guy was a pleasure to meet and see his souped up SE4- which the wife loved...
As with my other car purchases- did no real attempt to examine anything - did not haggle

the car looks good body wise ( waaaay better than my GTE) as does the interior
chassis- did not check
v5 - did not check
engine- it's there... but rusty and signs of coolant leak (may swap with the 3 litre from mine- worst case)
boot - opens...

did i take pictures....nah!!

I really thought five cars would be excessive... :)

Ta

Manny

If the 3.0 is an Essex I don't think it would be an easy fit. Better off if the engine is mullered to fit either another 2.8 cologne or something exciting....

Yes, the engine mounts (chassis side) are different between 6a & 6b/C. Apart from that, the rad, the gearbox and a bit of wiring -should be quite an easy conversion and it would be interesting to see a C the way Reliant originally designed it :-)

Thought there was also a bulkhead issue? (I may have dreamt that?? )

To be honest--- i am scared!! a lot of juggling about on the other cars...but the engine transplant idea i do like -- how much would it cost to get an 3.0 Omega in there up and running - i know its not the done thing to ask - but ball park figures ...2-3K...?

i guess time will be the battle! and DVLA...will that require an engineers report?

as with anything it depends on how much work you do yourself. If you paid a garage to do it (if you could find one that was interested) you'd probably be looking at £6-9k? most of that would be the trial and error that others on here have been through. You don't need an engineers report, just an invoice for the engine.

manual 3.0/3.2 Omegas are also pretty rare on the ground now.

i'd prefer auto any way to be honest- whether the box will fit?? ..... but any hooo - getting ahead of myself, i may be lucky with the existing engine..

Auto box will need big chassis mods.

My mistake I was thinking about the 5a conversion. Here's a 6 auto

If an A4LD fits then the 4L30 in the Omega should be fine - in a 6/8 chassis at least.

Don't discount the 2.5 Omega - still 174bhp or 190bhp with a set of 3.0 cams (Vectra MSD spec). More plentiful and doesn't command such a premium as the 3.0 and 3.2 have the stronger box that everyone wants when fitting a Saab engine in RWD format.

regarding the CC change from 2.8 to X surely that will require DVLA notification ? as long as you can provide evidence of the source and you need a garage report apparently ...

The coupe I had hadn't been registered as a v8. But yes it does make things easier if you inform the DVLA. And it's as simple as getting a letter from your local vosa mot station (usually they charge for it.) Send it off with v5 and iirc there's more cash involved....
