Too long and they can be cut and re threaded, or cut down and a joiner piece? I know you are not allowed to weld these bits (which would be easier!) the original rack is hugely expensive, and I keep reading about leaks. Escort ones are so cheap, you can get 8 escort ones for the price of one original.
Keep up the good work, I'm doing an om602 into my SE6a, with a newly galvanized chassis, so am watching with interest.
If you've got an se6 aren't they wider than the se5a? or is it just the body?

It's 3" wider, right down the middle.

Maybe the rods would need to be adjusted then. I'm sure the rack travel would be ok though as the wheels don't turn much!

I Like this! Couple of things that you probably know but I mention in case they might be useful: your engine looks as though it's inclined more steeply than standard ( higher at the front/ lower at the back). A u joint is not constant velocity and so they are designed to work as a pair to allow for mid-alignment but ideally the two shafts at the end (the engine and the axle) should be parallel. My axle front face was about 1.5 degrees from vertical so I used the same inclination for the engine. I believe that one of the omega conversions (lozzzzz?) originally struggled with a propshaft vibration (at 120mph or something) and it was finally cured by matching these angles.

If it's not possible to change the engine angle, you may be able to tilt the axle nose up by changing the length of the links slightly or the pivot positions. Not sure what other effects this would introduce.

As mentioned with the rack, ideally you want to match the same length as the original between the two inner joints to maintain the same bump steer, or rather the position of that joint when straight ahead should be in a position which doesn't make the steering arm move in or out as the suspension moves. That's the theory , I don't know how sensitive it is in practice.

If I was buying a new scimitar to use as a daily, it would be diesel. But I doubt I'll get to drive mine enough to get any significant saving... So I've petrol' it.

Just an update on the steering rack installation, complete oversight on my part the escort rack is a rear steer rack and scimitars are front steer racks,so in other words you turn left it turns right etc.Totally gutted as ive spent 2 days getting it fitted right, anyway found a BMW e46 rack which will look like it will fit better than the escort one,and yes before people ask its a front steer rack so if anyones doing the same sort of conversion just double check the rack is the right one

It would be a genius anti-theft device?

I had a similar issue with my throttle body, which when it arrived turned out to be sprung-open and pull to close, I then discovered it was part of a traction control system. I thought about the idea of a "lift to go, push to slow down" throttle pedal but decided against it!

I did wonder about that when you first posted, but assumed you'd already checked compatibility. E46 racks should be fairly plentiful, is it electric or pumped ?

the welded track rods i didnt like [but hey not my car] we have extension rods made for this problem, one end has female thread [internal to screw onto the original t/rod] and the other end has the male [for the track rod end]. this passes the IVA so should be good for the MOT

The old using a LH drive rack and turning it upside down trick could be employed

If the MOT man finds those joints he will fail the car.

thought i was being clever once cutting the sides out if some large nuts to make them C shaped and welding them on a set of stuck tie rods to undo the ends. Promptly failed the MOT. I argued that it was just nuts welded on, but they said any sign the tie rod had been excessively heated and they have to fail it.

As it happens the welds are covered up the gaiter, but even if they weren't my very very good mate is an mot tester so id have no problems :D :D :D :D

Great idea but I needed to take off 2 inches either side

as I remember most rack threads are M18x1,5
why not use a rack end from another car?

By chance, a mate has broken up a ssangyong musso, I've salvaged the rack as it is remarkably similar in size and length, it's just beefier!
I will be having a play with it sometime
