SS1 - Istrian Bue 1600

Post by MarkHawkins » Sun Aug 28, 2016 10:14 pm

Having decided that maybe a GTE wasn't the best car for driving practice around towns, we now have an SS1 taking the place of the green 6a that went to start a new life in Germany yesterday. Hoping to get it MoTd this week. Today we addressed the non moving headlamps - a combination of trim adjustment and poor electric connections, the passenger electric window (electrical again) and poor connections on the horn. The 15" alloy wheels have good Pirrelli tyres but two of the wheels have noticeable 'flats' in them. I'll see what a local wheel specialist makes of them. If they can't be straightened out, options are original wheels or more 15" wheels. I wonder if MGF wheels fit? The paint needs attention in places but that will have to wait. Bucket seats are fitted - these are rather snug so we may be swapping them out for originals at some point. Anti freeze question - what sort for the CVH - is red long life the thing to use?

.. i got mine about 5 weeks ago now

I was thinking of MGF wheels as I thought there was a common Metro connection?

Wondered where it had disappeared to on ebay!

i shall be having some original Michelotti style alloys refurbished soon if you want to earmark a set.
Best to stick the 15s back on ebay if you ask me!

The only metro connection is the calipers and some interior bits.

They do look like good tyres - Pirrelli P6000. I think the deciding factor will be insurance - the quote we have is on a standard car - the 15" wheels may change this ..

Rover 25/45 alloys fit, but could do with a thin spacer on the rear.

May look good, but how old are they?

Half a dozen"good" Pirelli P600s and P6000s in my pile but you wouldn't want to drive on any of them!

Open to a bit of debate on various threads.

I used the modern orange long life (OAT)stuff for a few years - with no apparent problems but have decided to revert back to the old fashioned blue ethylene glycol stuff as there are a number of classic car owners who seem to be having issues with modern antifreezes in general.

i'm with blue Anti-freeze, only as i've always used it and most of our cars pre-dated new fancy anti-freeze stuff that may or may not be compatible . . , . . .

swapping from 14" to 15" might not cause an issue, depends on the insurance company (and way wind blowing that day  ) 100mm PCD, should give a wide choice of wheels but offset is usually for FWD so not much cope . . . and agian some insurance get sniffy about swapping one style for another :(

I thought RR had a stack of bottle tops ready for sale, whilst others were chucking them away?

and if really pedantic, also the stalks & switches (some of?)

note LHS metro caliper is RHS SS1 ! , just in case you need to repair/swap one :w

Agreed, I used OAT for a while, until I read in a number of places that it wasn't recommended for silicone hoses, so when I changed to silicone (and it was an ideal opportunity to flush the system, as the two types shouldn't be mixed) I changed to the traditional blue type, which I use in all my cars.

It's not so much the silicone as the solder joints and brass components of the cooling system. Euroboxes are made with plastics, so OAT will work without causing problems.
