Good (lovely) day all,

today i started planning on how\where to place the ignition amplifier- as i experienced the same symptoms last sunday - when it was a very warm day and my car had been idling on the driveway - i got about 100m before the car just died... this is after the new coil and amplifier :( ..unperturbed i used the car on Tuesday - but this time drove it within 30 secs of starting with a little choke - and it was absolutely fine.. this may not be the best approach ..but so far

Image

the surface components were easy to scrape off..

Image

going to mount it on a CPU heatsink and use a CISCO SS bracket on the nearside inner arch..

Boo to me\car...

this morning - it was reluctant to start - when it did - seemed like three cylinders....stuttering during the first 10 mins and then conked out entirely - so i had it run home in the rain for 2 miles to get the euro box :( :(

boo

I’d just put a new amp on the dizzy I just posted to you with plenty of heatsink paste.

Good day all,

yesterday i moved the the ignition amplifier to the bulkhead ( mock up for testing) and ran a direct lead to the -VE post - all fired up nicely - left it idling for 25 mins - heatsink was slightly warm to the touch - so hopefully all should be well.
Image
I also replaced the O ring on the distributor supplied by Mr JIm King...my old one was a three lug but one lug had been snapped off..
I am still puzzled by the fact my engine runs best idle vacuum when the distributor is at the end of its rotational limit- so i hooked up a vacuum gauge at the T take of for the vac unit- and observed the needle was rapidly fluctuating between the 17-14 inches of Mg- but steadied when i adjusted the distributor at the end of its travel - searching the net suggests its worn valve guides....?

Went for a 30 mine drive - cut out twice - restarted with full choke - and then about 50m from home broke down again - the car would appear to fire up and then just die... :( :(
I popped the bonnet - the ignition amplifier was warm to to touch - the coil was considerably hotter- but not enough to burn...so back to square one ...will try to restart after a few hours...buggga!!

Good day all

no luck in starting and keeping it running - i tried last night a few hours after breaking down- swapped the coil - same result- tried the previous amplifier as a last resort...in the end we pushed it on to the drive
So now i have ordered three amplifiers and a spare coil - as i need to use the car on Saturday for 120 mile round trip...

Bugga...

Are you checking for a spark with each replaced part?

Are you sure it's not fuel related? Worth fitting a clear inline filter just to keep an eye on it and make sure you haven't got any water circulating in the system.

Perhaps check also the resistance of the ignition leads and the rotor arm - I have known these to fail, although admittedly in both instances when I had one "go" it was a loss of power and no restart sort of situation.

It does seem like water in the fuel to me..

Water in the tank was definitely one of my thoughts, as i had left the car idling on the drive ( inclined) when i first 'fixed' it - the nose was higher - so it may well have been petrol being drawn ( half a tank ) - but as the car died on a slight incline finally - i was hoping that water was not a possibility.
I do have a one of those large suction pumps\syringe- so..

If i jack the jack at the rear so it is higher than the nose..
Attach the syringe to the carb inlet pipe ( fed from a fuel filter)...
That should enough to diagnose the water theory??

Disconnect fuel pump to carb pipe and pump some fuel into a glass jar using the starter motor - water will separate from fuel.

The pipe in the fuel tank reaches to the bottom of the tank, so inclines shouldn’t affect it much if it’s half full.

Realistically the only way is have a peek inside the tank - through the sender - but your way sounds about right. I'd have it level though, otherwise the water will pool into a corner.

I'm not sure if it is the fuel I was using or the fact it was an injection engine (so had a high pressure re-circulation system) but water would end up as a milky layer at the bottom of the tank. Pulling some out of the tank (in my case, running the pump whilst having the feed line pointing into a receptacle) would see it separate in a glass jar.

Good day all

will check the fuel bowl as well...thank you sirs ... another member has highlighted the idle shut off solenoid - which i was half considering...i assume applying 12v (engine off) to it will prove it either works or not..?
