Swoakes SS1 DET Sprint Car

Long shot, but if there's a pinhole in the diaphragm of the fuel pressure regulator, then it must be possible for pressure from the inlet manifold (on boost) to enter the fuel return line (fuel pressure regulator has a vac hose feed from the inlet manifold). Could this be what's happening ?

Maybe Steve; I'll check it out when I remove it. Cheers

Swoakes SS1 DET Sprint Car New front wing

Post by swoakes » Wed Jun 13, 2018 1:02 pm

With our next event being Curborough I set too today removing the old wing and trial fitting and cutting the new old wing.

The replacement wing needs to be rubbed down and polished before final fitting or maybe a quick paint if I can't get a suitable finish.

Yep I know (I did think of you when I was doing it  )

The case for the defence is that Mr King had previously used the wing as a welding shield I think as it was covered in spatter marks :)

Still not up to your required standard Corky

Swoakes SS1 DET Sprint Car fuel pump relocated

Post by swoakes » Mon Jun 25, 2018 7:09 pm

Following the fuel pump failure at Ty Croes I hatched a plan to move the fuel pump to a better location to make work easier if we have a future issue.

I purchased a bracket and fabricated a small aluminium shelf for it to sit on at the back of the fuel tank all bolted through the chassis.

Feed to pump is 3/8 hose which is slightly too big tank end and too small pump end so going to employ a 12mm to 8mm reducer with 1/2 inch pipe to pump and 5/16 inch pipe to tank outlet (all R9)

Swoakes SS1 DET Sprint Car fuel tank presurisation

Post by swoakes » Tue Jun 26, 2018 2:59 pm

I took the fuel regulator off and checked the diaphragm. No obvoius holes in it. It was a bit of a struggle to reassemble and I now don't trust it so ordered a new one.

Fuel pressure gauge is all over the place ranging from not working to 10 bar so ordered a new Smiths gauge and matching sender (gulp)

Also ordered a Newton billet aluminium tank breather valve for the tank. A proper job with price tag to match  It lets air in to replace fuel taken out, prevents fuel escape in roll over and let's air out when tank is pressurised.

Also picked up some new 5/16 Fuel hose from local supplier Holmes Hoses.

Plan is to relocate the pressure regulator as it keeps breaking free from the inlet manifold. Plan to mount on the inner wing under the brake master cylinders.

Also dropped off some spare ECU's to Revlimit to solder some chip sockets on and swap my Horesham chip to one of the replacements. We can then ditch the temporary fuel pump supply currently in use.

Swoakes SS1 DET Sprint Car fuel tank presurisation

Post by reliant-reviver » Tue Jun 26, 2018 3:19 pm

What's the state of play with the fuel return hose? Presumably plumbed from regulator back to tank?

"We" had all sorts of fun with Max's turbo CVH plumbing the regulator in. It transpired the regulator wanted an 8mm return line as the 6mm was giving too much resistance and preventing the regulator from maintaining pressure.

Yes from reg back to tank. Return hose is 6mm on the DET. Always been like that.

Still not sure if presurisation was just due to heat that day :?

Swoakes SS1 DET Sprint Car fuel pump and regulator

Post by swoakes » Wed Jul 25, 2018 6:18 pm

Ok. A bit more progress. Reducer fitted to pump feed line to allow 12mm pipe onto stub of pump.

Billet pressure relief valve fitted to tank breather.

New fuel pressure regulator fitted to OS inner wing and pipework modified.

Swoakes SS1 DET Sprint Car fuel pump and regulator

Post by Corky » Wed Jul 25, 2018 7:04 pm

Nice one.

Do you still have the old regulator? And if so would you be willing to part with it for beer tokens?

I’m just thinking of mocking something up with my spare engine.

Yes still got it. The reason I ordered a new one is because I opened it up to check for leaks in the diaphragm (non that I could see). Myself and Bernie did get it back together (2 man Job) and it worked on the car but I didn't really trust it so went for a new one :)

I'll bring it with me to Curbs if you like and you can make me an offer I can't refuse

Swoakes SS1 DET Sprint Car fuel pump and regulator

Post by swoakes » Wed Jul 25, 2018 7:27 pm

Also just noticed that the fuel gauge is reading low. I nearly drained the tank to do the work on the pump and 5L of fuel only just moved the needle :? I've now filled it up ready for testing at Curbs and the gauge only reads 3/4 full.

No idea when this went wrong but it may explain why we had fuel flying out of the filler when we thought the tank was only half full at Harewood when trying to re-fuel.

I also test the little valve originally fitted to the tank breather. It opens when sucked to allow air in to replace fuel but you could not blow through it to release pressure. The billet one fitted does 3 jobs apparently. Lets air in and out and stops fuel leaking in a roll over. It better had for £42+Vat
