Saved from Scrap - ALJ 513K- Passed MOT!

Post by MarkHawkins » Sat Oct 18, 2014 10:26 pm

We couldn't resist the offer of a free 5a ALJ . Complete minus engine, gearbox + exhausts. It looks like it was repainted some time before 1989 when it was last used. It survived being dragged out of long grass and brambles by its tow bar so can't be too rotten! First task will be cleaning it up! The squirrels have left quite a few nuts in the car and the back seats are a little nibbled.

Car is on the register with basic information (ie no ownership details). Engine number should be SC3849. Is it manual or auto?

It's (was) a manual i believe- as it has a manual pedal box in it.

.....Bodywork looks to be in good order + it seems to have its full quota of wheeltrims - on the nearside at least. Well done for rescuing the car.......

The clean up begins. 4 Henry vacuum bags of squirrels nut stash came out this afternoon. The front seats cleaned up quite nicely and appear to be better quality than the ones in the '74 5A. Drivers door and rear hatch not open yet - lots of easing oil has been applied. After wire brushing and tapping and prodding the front chassis seems OK and it took a lift with a trolley jack OK.

Update - after some more wire brushing with an angle grinder attachment, some small holes have been found in the front extremities and out riggers - we plan to fix these ourselves by investing in a small gas mig. The steering column is now rotating freely and the front suspension is all intact including earth straps.

I don't know how the registration system works but it looks to possibly be a close relation to my car - JGH 514K.

The paint looks more presentable than mine too.

The second and third letters identify where it was registered, the numbers are just consecutive.

I suspect you may know but there are about 20 JGH....K on the database, so obviously a busy dealer in SW London.
