Anyone else spot that GW had vented SS1 brakes for sale at Curbs? :w

Glad you said that Jim and not me

I think a discussion thread would be a good idea but I'm not sure all will agree

Their last set I believe a snip at £500  (reduced from £900 apparently)

As far as I'm concerned the compsec has published his decision on big brakes - nothing's changed since?

Hi Steve, what are the diameters of those two discs? Are they both solid? From memory, the left disc looks like it could be the MR2 disc (high offset, low swept area, solid) Is it 263mm diameter? If so, that's MR2 Mk1 rear disc.
I can confirm that neither of those are Rover 625, the 625 discs I had would not have been in wrapping and I'm pretty sure I scrapped them as I never intended to go back to them.
Is the one on the right 45mm high vented? If it is that is the disc you need for the front, intended to redrill for bolting to the back of the SS1 hub, as per Paul Turnbulls car iirc. I can't remember what it's off exactly, but I'm sure it's rover 200/25/MG. May need the diameter turning down, but I'm sure the offset is perfect.

Steve, see below from another thread. I think this may answer your question. Looking at the photos, you'll need to use a spacer to get the wheels on (looks 15-20mm to me). On the plus side, the piston sizes are comparable to the Volvo four pots, so should work well with the 22.2mm master cylinder upgrade and bigger wheel cylinders.
Raz987 wrote:So my plan is/was to use Wilwood NDL (Narrow Dynalite) calipers as they bolt straight up to the 88.9mm mounting of the standard upright. One appeared on eBay last week so I snapped it up for £70 (RRP £120) :D
http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_in ... ts_id=8309
It's a 120-4982, so it's 35mm pistons and spaced for a 30mm disc. I had originally planned on using a Nissan 300ZX disc (280mm dia, 30mm thick, 54mm height) but after mounting the caliper to the upright and taking some measurements, it's not going to be possible. It needs a disc 30mm thick, 252mm dia and 70mm height (I want to put it over the studs), which I've had no luck finding. Diameter is not necessarily the problem, it's height.
So, it looks like I'll have to use a 45mm height disc bolted to the back of the hub, as per Paul Turnbulls thread. This would be a 21mm or 25mm thick disc though. So, does anyone know if I can remove one of the ally spacers from the caliper to make it suitable for a 21mm disc?:

That is a different caliper to the ones I sold to Steve, I sold him Superlites, not NDL. It does answer the question as to what disc is currently fitted to the front of the car though...

The car is now up on stands and wheel removed so that I can see what behind them. Discs fitted to front are mismatched one being much a much "thicker" vented disc than the other.

300ZX disc, machined down in diameter and redrilled to mount to the back of the standard SS1 hub. I made a bracket to mount Nissan Skyline GTR calipers to the SS1 upright. Stupid idea, massive overkill. SCRAP

I hope that helps. Apologies for leaving you with so many random bits of projects, I can imagine it's made it difficult to gain direction. I should have removed all the previous attempts from the equation (I should have done a lot of things...)

Craig, I had a choice of piston sizes to choose from and I'm 99.9% sure that I chose these ones based on running a standard MC.

Hi Raz..thanks for the input.

I have a set of new uprights fitted with modified discs from Steve Cork that I plan to fit some Willwood superlites onto using a custom bracket (Josh has the Willwoods you sold me). Steve Cork has done this on his racer and this setup allows 13" wheels to be fitted which seems to work very well judging by how well he & Craig are both doing.

Well finally got my ar$e in the garage and made a start

I thought I'd start easy and fit the replacement uprights from Corky fitted with turned down MG discs; my Wilwoods should bolt straight on when they are removed from a certain yellow 5a  . The NS is fitted but the other side will have to wait for a new top ball joint as I bent it breaking the taper with my new scissor type splitter

Image

Image

I have also taken the OS rear trailing arm off so that I can fit the drum back plate removed by Raz to start fitting discs (I'm going back to drums) and to enable me to drill out the broken rear anti-roll bar link and replace with the BMW type. That is now done and the back plate is cleaned and is awaiting paint before refitting.

Image

As regards the BMX drop links; they are 10mm and the holes in the ARB are 12mm I think; am I best to weld a M10 washer both sides before I fit :?:

You could simply drill another hole - I'm probably fitting helicoil inserts in the existing thread.
