Corky's Scimitars

As I didn't get an entry for Combe, I decided to fit the RS3 road tyres and remove the number squares. Whilst I was at it, I swapped the standard cam out for the Autosprint one I had ready for the rebuild of the spare engine (as you do.....)

I went out for a run, and can feel an immediate improvement over the standard cam. It just keeps on pulling :D It caught me by surprise a couple of times when changing up (it was raining). I doubt there are any more horses, but certainly more torque on tap lower down the rev range.

(Maybe I should've removed the timing strut too   )

Thanks Colin.

It's managed its debut season without getting hurt, which has surprised me

Even more surprising is that it managed a full season season without a single breakdown (mainly because I had them all before the season started). The only issue I had was a leaking cam cover gasket at 3 Sisters, which was an easy ten minute job to replace. Otherwise it's been as good as gold and hasn't done too badly in either the CM or SSSC championships.

Now I need to decide what I'm going to do next season?

I'd really like to try something different as I've done seven continuous seasons with a small sports turbo of some description. I really don't fancy sprinting a GTE or Coupe, but my heart fancies a naughties Porsche Boxster S, S2000 or Z4M. My head says stick with the SS1 and tweak it to improve the handicap. Decisions decisions.....

Nevermind a Z4M, get a Z3 M Coupe and remain in the bread van owners club

That would be nice, but they're a fast appreciating classic nowadays. Not sure the budget I have in mind would stretch that far.

The trouble is either it will be quite costly (Boxster) or will need money spending to make it competitive (S2000, MX5), don't know about the Beemer.

There is a lot to be said for the SS1 (light, torquey, decent gearing and power, friendly handling), not quite the grip or brakes of a more modern.

What Josh said. If I had the money there would have been one on the drive a long time ago.

Just develop the SS1. There should be another 50bhp to find without too much trouble surely.

Brother had a Boxter and recently switched to a Cayman. Capable but soulless things. Scimitars may seem a bit crap some days but they are delightful when the stars align.

And the owners club is reet friendly.

The SS1 isn’t going anywhere, but it may get a garage buddy

Cheapest one on Autotrader :- https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... 8310023635

But in completely the wrong colour.

This one's more like it, but about three times my budget  https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... 6307990657

I'd go for non German because of the spares cost, I've got two German cars at the moment and there were rumours that Mercedes were trying to get a monopoly on the spares market worldwide for their cars ,they were not successful in this endeavour, but I'm sure they will try again even though quite a few of there spares aren't made in Germany ,stick to the ss1 :D

I’ve been bitten by that before. Sold my 3.5ltr stroker GTC and I bought a Merc 500 SL, it didn’t end well :w But I’ve had a lot of German cars, and on the whole they’ve been very good indeed. Parts can be quite expensive, but if you know where to look most can be bought for sensible money.

Manufacturers have been trying for years to control parts and servicing. They lost the servicing vs warranty battle, so I’m confident that they’ll never win a monopoly on parts supply. Though I have been known to be wrong once or twice

Never spend more than you’re prepared to lose on the first corner when it goes wrong.

Never try and argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you based on experience.
