Rear axle oil leak

Post by Eric2205 » Wed Jul 31, 2019 4:13 pm

Leaving my Scimitar garage I found that the few drops of oil that I have under the diferential have turned into a lot of oil
A priori the leak is at the front of the rear axle

Added oil is not complicated but I would like to solve this problem.
Can you tell me if it's complicated to do? If it's just a seal to change?

Hardest part for me was getting the old seal out without the proper tool.
IIRC some diffs use a collapsible spacer that goes inside so that torquing up the flange is a solid job. You might need a new one.

Not axle or diff - collapsible spacer - long time since I had to replace a seal and that was on a Coupe. The main thing to do is mark where the nut is before you remove it then you can tighten it up to the same position. You also need something to stop the flange from turning when you apply the force to undo and redo the nut - I used a bar ( or length of angle iron ) screwed in the flange bolt holes and jammed against the chassis ( or ground ). The seal I have always removed with a ( large ) screw driver. Get it right and the fitted collapsible spacer should survive.

Peter,
Thanks for clarifying my comment on the collapsible spacer; I did the same with mine - marked the position of the nut and re-fitted the flange after replacing only the seal. Diff is still working OK.
