SPAX or AVO or Gaz or Protech?

Post by 1969SE5 » Wed Jul 17, 2019 11:40 am

time for new front shocks.... which are better by experience ? AVO's are cheaper by £46 on a pair, both are Height and damp adjustable...........

SPAX or AVO ?

Post by Oaksey » Wed Jul 17, 2019 11:54 am

AVOs are poor. SPAX are better but I'd use Protech or Gaz as they're usually cheaper still and made to order?

SPAX or AVO ?

Post by Nigel Clark » Wed Jul 17, 2019 12:11 pm

I've had Gaz on my TR6 for about 12 years and on my SE6A for about 3 years. No problems at all and easy to set up.

Well Gaz have come in £18 cheaper than the AVO, so looking like a winner so far, unless anyone has any horror stories ! ? Protech yet to reply.........

SPAX or AVO or Gaz or Protech?

I had a quote from Protech for my Se5a for dampers with springs and it was about £560 which included VAT and delivery.

SPAX or AVO or Gaz or Protech?

I have Spax on the 5a (expensive double adjustable for bump and rebound as well as spring height), Spax on 8 ball, Spax on the back of snotty with Avo’s on the front and protech all round on the sprint car. The damper business is so incestuous it’s almost unbelievable, unless you’re looking at high performance or low weight, they’re all much of a muchness.

SPAX or AVO or Gaz or Protech?

think i am being swayed by the price, with no horror stories to compound in either direction, always used Bilstein myself on the rally car, but not an option for the Scimitar....hence my dilemma...

Avo's are junk, don't touch them. My used ones failed with fluid leaks so I purchased new ones, then the bushes soon failed on those so I sent them back to have new bushes fitted, to then have one suffer a bad fluid leak due to a seal failure soon after.

I removed them and fitted some Gaz units, which have lasted a year so far. As an Avo customer, I'd say, don't buy Avos!

I would not use Spax ever again. They do not seem well made, are sprayed with one coat of paint with no primer and after not many miles will start their infamous clunking noise. For some reason or other these facts seemed to upset some Spax groupies  - I don't know why.

Check my project thread and some of the responses from others that have had the same problem:
http://www.scimitarweb.co.uk/sgwrs/view ... 00#p292004

Hope that is of some help in making a decision. I was seriously angry about the Spax ones as they were not exactly low cost at the time. I also had quite a few contacts from other people, after seeing the YouTube video, who were having the same problem.

I used to have Avo on my GT6. They were replaced with Gaz following an MoT advisory for leakage. No trouble since. 'Nuff said!
