Water pump pulley cracking up

Post by gordini5 » Sun Apr 28, 2019 5:59 pm

Fitted 5 years ago and with only about 7000 miles since the water pump pulley is cracking - common fault or any suggestions for cause?

The crack is 360 round the shaft and spreading outwards and can be felt on the inner leaf of the pulley too.

I've kept the belt tensioned as the manual suggests about 1/2" deflection under thumb pressure. I do have a big thumb though :)

Never seen that , but I would change the pump as it looks like it may fail at any time .

Yes, very strange, having slackened the belt the pump runs smoothly, no excess belt wear and all pulleys aligned okay.

After 5 years lying dry is it a daft idea to re-fit the old pump, are seals likely to leak? At the time there turned out to be nothing wrong with the old pump.
