1971 SE5 - Rear Axle 7HA / 4HA

Post by Smiler » Thu Feb 28, 2019 9:19 pm

Hello folks,

Could someone please confirm which axle I should have fitted to my '71 SE5?
I believe it is supposed to be the 7HA, is this correct? How can I check?

I believe that the 4HA was fitted after '72 to the SE5a, is this correct?
I also believe that the 4HA is a stronger axle, is this also correct?
Is the 4HA axle a straight swap for the 7HA on my SE5?
What are the differences? Is it appreciably heavier?

A lot of questions but I am building my car lighter with a more powerfull modern engine and so am looking at ATB/LSD diff fitment options.

Regards,

Smiler.

The 4HA was fitted earlier than that I thought (namely only the first year or so of SE5s had the 7HA).

I think the rear cover is different - can you post a picture showing the Watts linkage?

Thanks for the quick reply, I shall take a photo tomorrow. The tank is currently removed so I can get a nice clear shot of it.

Have a feeling 7ha in 5 was only the first 100 cars??

4ha is stronger and heavier.

7ha’s fitted with a LSD is less weak but ultimately not as strong as the 4ha.

Plenty of Coupe’s have been swapped to 4ha, the main issue is clearance to Coupe boot floor with the larger diff iirc? That won’t be an issue on a 5.

I don’t think it should have a 7HA but all sorts of things happen over time..

Sounding like I should have a 4HA fitted then, thanks both.

I shall post up a photo of mine tomorrow.

It was the first 500 SE5 cars that had a 7HA as standard , it’s smaller and shorter diff nose , so it has a longer prop as standard .
