Se5a heater matrix and hose access/repair

Post by Alex456 » Sun Aug 26, 2018 1:04 pm

Does anyone know how to access the heater matrix to replace hoses? I recently ended up with hot, wet feet and a steamy car because (I imagine) a hose has perished. I've looked everywhere inside the car and in the engine bay but can't tell how to access those hoses. Can anyone help?

If your feet got wet, it’s probably the valve that’s failed. Repair kits have been NLA for years but you can effect a permanent repair by removing the valve bits and blanking off the hole with (I think) a 10p piece held in with JB Weld. The air flaps in the actual heater unit separate hot and cold air so it’s not strictly needed - it was deleted in the (near identical) SE6/a/b unit.

Heater valve kits are available from Rimmer Bros and various suppliers: https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-RT1228

Thanks for the link. Is there a thread on here showing how to access it? I've undone everything I can and reached a dead end... The heater seems to be in a sealed box!

There is a carpeted panel on the side of the footwell - looking at the parts manual, it is held in with a couple of rivet/nail things (same as hold the blowers in) right up the bulkhead.

Item 72, held in with 2 off no.73

Se5a heater matrix and hose access/repair

When Valve is done - easy fix.
If not (Matrix itself - mine had a leaking solderjoint) it needs removal as it can't be soldered in place.

But if its a lot of hot steamy water I am almost certain the valve is done (prop. only the screw in the retainer had vibrated loose). The hose connectors are in the engine comparment so probably hot water will pop out there not interieur....
