Rear Screen Heater several kiloOhm... Can printed wires heater be saved/regenerated?

Post by Pepe » Wed Jun 06, 2018 3:10 pm

Hi guys,

this is a more general question not only fitting SE5s:

Can a worn/rotton rear windscreen heater be saved somehow?

I know I can fix some cuts in single wires with silverpaint, but a whole heater is another beast.
Time, Water and UV radiation have dissolved or oxidized the copper print on my rearscreen heater in a lot of places, so I end up in something like 14 kOhm of resistance...not 1,4 Ohm which would be something more usable :)

So resistance on screen (measuring at terminals) is way to high and the relay relief I've constructed is useless currently ....

Is there anyway of repairing this?
Lightly sanding the remaining copper and soldering on resistive wire was my first idea, but this is probably not working well...
I'd need approx 16Ohm per strand to achive something that heats up to ~140W. So ~ 16Ohm/m resistive wire....

Any ideas?

my rear screen is no watertight anyway so it might be better to get a freshly sealed, refurbished one from somewhere, but where?

The latest ones from the club have the heating element embedded in the glass and not just "printed" on the outside - much better.
