Indicators - quick fix???

Post by accyimp » Mon Jun 22, 2020 8:32 pm

Hi - giving the 5a (1974) a once over before MOT -
New to Scimitars & electrics not my strong point!

Most stuff seems OK - BUT indicators not working from stalk!
The hazards are working although the tell tale in the right hand dial took ages to illuminate but flashed OK afterwards.
All fuses intact -
Is it likely to be dirty contacts on the stalk? WD40? strip & clean? earthing fault?
Any help greatly appreciated
Cheers, Andrew.

Flasher unit (SFB114 or equivalent) is near the hazard unit (SFB130 or equivalent), above right footwell heat outlet, separate units so the flasher could be faulty. Otherwise, wiring issues or stalk switch dirty - contacts are made using simple sprung wire brushing across contacts, so easy to clean.

First check if indicators don’t work is to cycle the hazard switch lots of times and/or spray some switch cleaner in there. The indicator power supply is via the hazard switch, which never gets used :D

To expand on Jim's good advice, Water Dispersant is NOT switch cleaner, even though it took 40 attempts to make it do *anything* useful.

There's nothing worse than intermittent indicators. Oh, hang on a minute...

Working again - cheers all!
Switch cleaner sprayed into hazard light switch and 'cycled' as suggested & WD to lubricate stalk then switch cleaned.
