ATTEMPTED SCAM on my SST TODAY

Post by alan.wells » Wed Oct 16, 2019 8:35 pm

HI Folks,
Firstly i Received a text message asking if my car was still for sale
The Text ( Classiccars: Sarah, emailed us on your listed car, is it still for sale?, Kindly text her directly via sfowler12@zoho.com with your firm price email only. Thnx )

I replied with a YES

Sarah Replied back with the following

Subject: (No Subject)
To: Alan Wells <xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Thanks for the prompt reply, I'm really keen to buy it off you. please, give me a first buying priority and I will be paying the asking price so consider it sold, I will like you to be honest with me because I will not be available to come for inspects due to nature of my work, Honestly, I am purchasing it for my son who has just graduated on his class in University of Nottingham, He studied Science and Engineering, "I am so proud of him . I want it as a surprise package to appreciate him for his achievement and to be delivered it to my family before my arrival
I am working with Cygnus Gas Field and we are presently offshore at North Sea, United Kingdom in the Cygnus project,. We do not have access to phone at the moment, its days off and days on, which is why I contacted you with INTERNET messaging facility. Where is it located at the moment? Does it have any history I should be aware of? and MOT/TAX if you don't mind my asking... I don't mind adding an extra £200.00 for you just to take down the posting, I am already in talks with the courier that will handle the pick-up and delivery after payment. As regards of the payment, I will be paying through PayPal account, using PayPal instant wire transfer service, I will need your PayPal email account details. If you do not have, you can set up a PayPal account proper at xxxxxxxxxxxxx and I will make the payment through PayPal, this way, all I will need is your PayPal email address.. I will be needing the details below..

1) Your PayPal Email Address

2) Your Picked Up Location Address

Hope to hear from you soon.
Many thanks

My reply to this :- Hello Sarah, many thanks for your interest in my car, I am quite prepared to sell you my car and send my details to you but I am slightly wary, Firstly, could you possibly provide me with your surname, uk contact address, and mobile contact number, also for the DVLA, they require buyers and sellers signature on the vehicle log book which is known as the V5C document which is what I send back to the DVLA, when the vehicle has been paid for and collected.

Regarding the car, the vehicle has never failed an MOT since its been in my possession 17 years, the present MOT expires in July 2020, and the car is in good all round condition for its year, regarding the Road Tax, when the car sold the DVLA automatically cancel the tax and send monies to previous owned, so it would need taxing.

Kindest Regards

Alan Wells

I have sold a number of items overseas and the messages were often in broken English, sent with the aid of google translate I guess. Never had a problem with any of them. One needs to take care in any transaction, I had an ex user of this site try to buy a gearbox with fake 20's :( . Alans posted a newish scam, where the sender of the email wants you to set up a "PayPal" account with the link they attached, you are giving them all the details they need to set one up a real one in your name. I guess if you provided your legitimate paypal details they would not be heard from again.

Roger you may wish to delete the link in the op email it leads to a fake account

either a fake link or clinking on it puts spyware on your computer..... one should NEVER open any text link in any email you receive... unless you are absolutely sure it is legit.

This scam and variations have been around almost as long as PayPal.

Offshore worker, consider it sold, paying extra to remove the listing, etc, etc, etc.

I was once told never trust anyone who uses the word "honestly"

Raises my suspicions at the very least.

I sold orange coupe OPY 170G to Ben M who worked for weeks at a time in a submersible at the bottom of the North Sea....

He could call me on the phone to discuss everything and I could understand every word - when he wasn't breathing helium.

Hiya, I was sent a link to an paypal account login. It was incredibly accurate, it was only because I'm a frequent user I recognised the colours were very slightly different.

And of course the url was incorrect

Is we sideways yet...
