Not soo good - and I doubt an endoscope will be of any help as if the valve clearances are OK then it looks like a poorly piston..

Could be a burnt valve, I have had a few in the past.

It will be interesting to see when I pull the head off. To be fair I have known about this for some time. When I first got the car and compression tested it some years ago number 4 was the lowest compression. And I have had some people comment that I have had a puff of smoke from the exhaust on occasion. I also know from when I did the valve seals that there is some damage to the casting on top of the head for this valve. I am just amazed that the engine still seems to run reasonably well.

I suppose it has got worse over the years and I have gotten used to it.

Lovely to see your photos of your trip around Ypres and the Somme. I visited those sites for the first time on a school trip two months ago, and it really was a life-altering experience. Beautiful scenery there too - made only more beautiful by that Scim... :D
