Looking for my parent's Scimitar SE6A TAF170S

Post by Decky_Merchant » Wed Mar 23, 2016 5:16 pm

Hi all,

First and foremost, I am a new member here, and so I apologise if my post is in the wrong section!

I have a real interest in the SE6, and I'd like to get hold of a very good SE6A in future. The reason why I even came to know about the car/model and become interested in classic cars full stop is because my parents owned said car in the early 90s.

The long and short of it is that I'd like to find out as to whether this car is on the road and potentially, if it was possible, consider buying it back (depending on whether the car is even roadworthy and if the owner wanted to part with it!). The main reason for wanting this car in particular is that it has some real personal significance (not just because it was owned by my parents, but for another reason), hence why I'd like to try and find it before looking for a different car.

The details I know about the car are:

Model: Scimitar SE6A
Reg: TAF 170S
Year: 1978
Paintwork: Brown/Cream/Brown colour combination.
Interior: Tan/Cream colour.
Gearbox: Manual (with overdrive, as per the A model).
Sold: 1992/1993 to the Manager of Heinz, Cheshire.

At the time when it was sold, it was almost a totally original example in all respects.

I actually found an example online which at first glance, seemed to be the car in question (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwfz658EI44), but unfortunately, that car was registered in 1977 (not 78'). This car is almost an exact lookalike.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as it would certainly bring a smile to my face if I could find it!

Many thanks,

Kind regards,
Jack.

Hi Jack. Have you typed Registration correctly? If correct no record on the DVLA web base?

Hi,

Many thanks for your reply.

My Dad is certain that that is the correct registration. Some website's don't seem to be bringing anything up, but when I checked AutoTrader Vehicle Check, they came up with the following:

"We've identified this car using the details you provided

FORD CAPRI II GL 1978

Vehicle image
Vehicle Image for illustrative purposes only.

Registration number: TAF 174S
Body type: 3 Door Hatchback
Colour: Blue
Date of first registration: January 1978"

Obviously, this makes finding the car more difficult, but with that particular colour combination I was hoping that someone might have seen it if it was still on the road.

Kind regards,
Jack.

Hi all,

Major apologies...Dad had a rethink and realised that it was TAF 170S! This matches up with the AutoTrader checker.

Has anyone seen the car?

Many thanks,

Kind regards,
Jack.

First, welcome to the forum :)

Well, it does now come out on the DVLA MOT website, here, and it's shown as having last passed an MOT in 2007. However, there's still nothing on the main DVLA registration website. So you can "probably" say that it's not been on UK roads since then. What's happened since, is a bit more speculative?

Hi Roger,

Many thanks for the warm welcome! I hope to become a regular on here eventually.

I must have typed the reg incorrectly. The MOT is very interesting; it sounds as though the car is sat on someone's drive. Perhaps the chap who bought it didn't want to part with it. Assuming that's the case, the car would still be in the Cheshire area.

I wonder whether it would be worth contacting the DVLA for the keeper's details?

Maybe drop a line to the SE6 registrar?

Welcome by the way!

Hi,

Many thanks for the welcome!

My Dad doesn't know anything more about the gentleman who bought it other than that he was the Manager of the Heinz Factory off the M61. This was 1992/1993.

The only other thing that he recalls is that he also drove a Scimitar SS1.

I'm surprised that I've found out as much as I have so far about the car, but it'd be excellent to know more!

Funny, I always thought the Heinz factory was just off the M6 near Wigan. Is there another one in Cheshire?

Maybe the PO lived closer to the M61 than the factory?..

It's quite possible Phil. Unfortunately my Dad just doesn't know any more, and since it was now 22/23 years ago, I suppose it's optimistic to think that the car is still in the area. But, Dad seemed to think that there might be a good chance that he kept the car, and the MOT findings above make me wonder as to whether it's now stood up on someone's drive.
