pop-up headlights NOW INCLUDING HIDDEN HEADLIGHTS

Post by geoffp67 » Sat Dec 31, 2011 8:45 pm

As a regular reader of the forum I've come to the opinion that I'm not the only overgrown 7-year-old who likes pop up headlights. So just for fun - apart from the SS1 & Sabre - what other cars have this most sensible and desirable feature ?
Who can add to my list - does anything even come close in terms of bangs per buck or smiles per £

BMW 840/850
Mazda mx-5
TR7
Lotus Esprit, Elan, Excel
toyota MR2

Pop-up headlights do not contribute to aerodynamic efficiency....
Must say that I've never tried top speed comparison with headlamps up/down! But with the increasing trend to drive with headlights on, that's not "green"... but might maybe save your life though.

More (negative!) thoughts...
Was going about 100 mph on country road in Italy when pop-ups popped down (Lotus Elan) ...
Pop-ups almost always have play...and problems
Don't like them!

Strictly speaking there's no real *engineering* necessity for pop-ups, the main reason for them is because legislators have seen fit to impose a minimum height requirement for headlights, which if your car is small and low more or less obliges you to have them. They are less common these days because of the trend to build cars like the proverbial brick outhouse, which means getting headlamps high enough isn't a problem. :(

Oh I love pop ups and flop ups (what I would call those of the SS1 style that pivot foward)
Brief list of cars I've owned and you see the trend... SS1, Sabre, Porsche 924, 944, 928

Want me an RX7 or 280zx...

If you're bringing kit cars into it, GP Talon, although strictly speaking the covers dropped rather than the headlamps rising.
