Insurance - young driver

Postby ajlelectronics » Sat Jan 23, 2010 2:09 pm

Anybody know who might talk sensible prices for an 18 year old driver please? Tried Adrian Flux
, but a 2.5K quote on a 1200 Herald shows they don't actually want the business.

My son and quite a number of his friends found CIS ( Cooperative ) more young driver friendly than most. That was a couple of years ago though.

Lancaster may be worth a try, in my experience they seem to be the most flexible broker offering classic policies.

They were the cheapest by a long way for DJ at 17 on his SS1 (at around £1800). Convertibles have quite a loading too.

He's now with Footman James at 18 - who were just cheaper than Adrian Flux (now £650 with one years no-claims).

Interestingly, of the many, many companies that he tried, ALL of those advertising in Slice were cheaper than the others.

Assumings its for a Herald (from the post..) then see who the TSSC does theirs with - I think Lancaster (they were the best for young drivers when i was still one)?

The insurance market has changed dramatically over the last 10 years though and certain brokers will prefer certain marques (especially when it comes to the main ones like Triumph/MG etc).

I am with classic line who are pretty reasonable for me, but for young drivers I am not sure but maybe worth an e-mail!

Thanks for all that. We went for the Herald because we thought it would be indicative of the sort of money the insurance would cost.

As yet, he has no idea what car he wants, I'm trying to guide him into something that he can maintain himself etc, but he has to do a bit more browsing.

An SS1 surely?
I'm 18 and have held my licence for a year, with Footman James I pay £550 a year for a TPFT policy with limited miles, though to increase the mileage would not cost that much more.

Well of course it would be nice, but he is after something more small van or estate orientated. I would guess there is little point thinking about a GTE due to engine size.

If it were an SS1, it would have to be a 1300 I assume? I do have a blue turbo SS1 for sale but I'm sure the insurance companies would have hysterics at the very idea?

Footman James would only insure me on a 1300 (perhaps a 1400?) but not the 1600 of 1800. Best online quote I got was £1800 on an 1800ti, over 3 times the price (and power!) of a 1300.
Oh I will have a galvanised 1300 up for sale soon by the way....

if a small estates in line the Kia Rio's not too bad a car to have, i had use of the 1.3 which belonged to my dad when my corsa's lambda and temperature sensors went on the fritz, nice car, roomy, quite nippy when you give it some go, and my only gripe with it was the brakes were hair triggered or so it seemed.....
