Didn't bounce, but no reply. I'm putting the project on hold until the world starts turning again because neither of the interested firms are active just now.

Alex.

GTC Hardtop survey

I hope you'll think it's good news anyway.

The new moulding is going to cost £8.36 per metre. My hardtop will need just under 6 metres so that will be £50.16 for the full length. I'm assuming they are all the same! There will also be postage but I can't price that until I know the weight involved. Probably most of you will be happy to do your own cutting and gluing but I could cut and join the rubber into one loop for the rear window and two for the sides for £15.

The slightly less good news is that although the moulding factory is open, the toolmakers who make the die are closed! So there is no delivery timescale at the moment.

If anyone has any comment about the price or anything else please let me know, either here or by PM.

Alex.

The order has gone in today. As I said there's no word about delivery times so we will just have to 'contain our impatience' as they say.

Good question Mark, I only wish I had the answer for you!!

The invoice shows a cost for 'part cost tooling' but doesn't specify what part/percentage it is. So that makes me think that I have some ownership of the die(s).
However when I was talking with Seals Direct I got the impression that they would only make more of the seal, after the first batch, if I requested it. Which makes me think that I have control (ownership?) over all future production.

Of course it's all a bit academic. The initial batch will probably keep all the windows in all the GTCs happily in place for the foreseeable future if not longer.

Alex.

I OWN a couple of sets of "FORMES" or cutting dies.
One is for the shims that preload the bearings in the pinion block on PAS racks, this is owned by me, but kept at the gasket manufacturers for safekeeping LOL.
The other sets are the Original Lucas dies for the L891 lamp assemblies, both inner and outer seals.
Buyers beware that the others on sale from other sources do not have the lower cut outs for the drain/venting of the lamps, so in years to come if you use the other type the internals of the lamps could rot out. :w

Out of curiosity, how many meters are you getting made?
i.e. how many hard tops can be repaired?.

The minimum order was 100 metres (don't know about future orders) and it will take about 6 metres to do the 3 windows. Unfortunately nobody knows how many GTC hardtops are in captivity...... which is partly why I started this thread :)

100m is just over 16 units, what sort of take up have you had? Mark

If you scan back over the thread you'll see who has responded. I make it 9, plus me of course, and one person has replied to Guy's article in Slice. So 11 in total.
