If you wanted to be clever, you could sort out a "boost" button for a minute. Just had a quick look on ebay (for ease) and a plethora of timer relay units which would give you (with a couple of other relays) automatic parallel operation for about a minute, then on series operation for (say) 5 minutes.
Although most passengers don't notice the distortion I see it when driving. I noticed the alternator ease off when the relay timed out so the heating element on the Ford must be packing a punch.
