Heated Screens

Post by philhoward » Thu Dec 06, 2012 4:40 pm

OK Ladies and Gentlemen..

We're about to embark on a batch of heated windscreens (there are some heated rears for 5's and 6's CLEAR ONLY still with Ricky Evans). For those who don't know, they're the fine element type found on modern cars (and Fords since the early 90's or so); add a relay and away you go (aside from fitting of course!). No chance of damage from scratches as the element is embedded in the glass (handy when it comes to the rears!).

On the menu tonight is:

Coupe/5/5a front - tinted and plain glass. SE5/a rear - tinted & plain
SE6/a/b/GTC/Middlebridge front - tinted and plain glass. SE6 all rear - tinted and plain
Coupe rear - tinted and plain (tbc).
SS1/T/Sabre - tinted and plain (tbc)

Minimum batch size is 5 off each flavour. Windscreens are currently on a budget price of £220 for RSSOC Members, £240 for non-members. Rear screens budget prices are £180 for members, £195 for non-members.

Before anyone mentions the price they used to be, this was 6 or 7 years ago so sadly prices have risen.

Do I stand down on my venture then? Seems daft if you have arranged something already. I am waiting on prices for batches of 10, but nothing received as yet.

Should I not go ahead, I will commit to a tinted GTC screen.

Will shipping to Ireland be possible?

edit - Possibly - will have to confirm...might be able to get it to NI easier if that helps?

Do you expect the Coupe rear screen to be the same price as the GTE one, or cheaper as it's quite a bit smaller? Anyway, put me down for one please.

MOD edit: Phil replied:- Rear price will be confirmed once a sample has been evaluated - hopefully cheaper than a GTE one but we're after expressions of interest based on the budget price, Chris.

Geoff added:- You often find the setting up + labour + shipping is the major cost and the difference in marginal cost of the materials is negligible. True for most industries

something for the future if I ever break a screen perhaps ? Currently dont need one and dont have the budget. Does the club dare have these in storage for ages ? Lot of dosh to be tied up.
MOD edit Jim replied : this is expressions of interest - orders will be based on this list so that there isn't a large stock

Are these things available aftermarket for mass-produced cars that didnt have them as standard ? Im thinking mk4 golf as I have one, but a general question / afterthought.
MOD edit Jim replied :- yes but minimum order is 5 or 10 (depending on model/price)

I am still waiting to get a quote. Same as the GTC front armature. Chased them yet again yesterday and they were going to get back to me same day. Zilch. I thought there was a recession on and people needed business?

I would be very very tempted by a coupe rear (clear), will the heating elements run vertically as per the originals? (rather than horizontal as it the general way)

cheers, Matt

p.s. I should be able to get to my garage this week to dig out my spare rear screen as a template, I'll let you know Phil when I've found it

As originally posted Matt, they're like the fronts, modern (almost invisible) embedded filament - not like the originals.

I'd like put my name down for a Front and Rear screen for a 5a.

Anyone know if the tint is definitely the green sundym type? rather than a brown? if its sundym I'll go for that as a preference, any other tint and i'd prefer it to just be plain.

If the prices were a bit lower I'd have got some for the coupé as well. But I'm not sure I can find the money for that at the moment!

most Scimitar Triplex sundym that I've seen is black tint, the green seems to be quite rare?
