New replacement for cracked 5a dashes - anyone interested?

Post by Crouchie_b » Sat Nov 17, 2012 6:48 pm

5a dashes seam to suffer from cracking around the fixing holes and the clocks so I've being helping Pete Brown with a mould to make replacements out of fibreglass.
The mould came off the plug that well that all the fine detail such as the crackle finish has come really well.
The final detailing was finished today & 6 coats of willslip wax (wax on, wax off, Mr Miyagi style) applied.
We should be ready to run the first batch pretty soon if any one is interested?

Hi Guys, there isn't a price set as yet, its just a metaphorical toe in the water to see how much interest there is. A with most small batch runs the price comes down with increasing numbers committing to the batch as the development cost is spread over the run.

Black ones will be produced in a black gel coat but not quite sure what to do with the tan ones? it would take some time to ensure a consistant colour match with powder added to the resin, so it may be better to produce them in a ready for paint finish? - coments please.

I would recommend clear gelcoat and add gelcoat pigment. It is quite cheap to buy a small selection of colours and then a tan could be mixed quite easily. I have a tin of RAL1004 pigment if you should need a little to test.

It is about 1inch higher or lower than the one you have Reliant changed them at some point

Typical Reliant
That means that I'll have to measure the location on the one I have and all those interested will have to do like wise to ensure that it will fit.

Fell foul of that one - bought a replacement 5a steering lock which didn't fit mine...

Ok I've had the mould out and measured it and a couple of 5a's today. The early 5a's have the lock barrel centre point 1.25" from the edge of the face of the hexagonal moulding for the steering column while the later ones are 1.75" from the edge.
This does not cause any issue as we have moulds for either and you just need to let me know which one you have.
The RAL colour chart has been ordered and we should be able provide in tan as well as black.
Price yet to be confirmed but an indication of the level of interest will help to set it as keenly as possible.
Many thanks to those who have already expressed interest and for the feedback.
