Give over Craig you know he won't accept your challenge, mind he could suprise you and whoop you big time. It would be interesting to see how a 1300 would do in the handicap don't you think?

Craig knows full well I'm dying to go competing. It's just unfortunate that doing cars for myself falls to the bottom of the list unless I close my garage door and ignore everyone else!

Yesterday was spent blasting and welding wishbones for someone. Today will be spent attending to none garage things for the 'rents
Sunday morning I have a Rialto here to be serviced for a pest (befriend only people who pay well or are knowledgeable/useful!)

Next week I can look forward to replacing the bottom sections of some Citroen 15CV doors.

Inbetween all that I've the girlfriend and my other personal interests to persue!

One of these days I'll remove myself from the forum....

a 1300 may well be useful in Roadgoing with the SSSC handicap to be honest Bob. Would need to be a refreshed 1300, not some 25yr old version where the lobes have all worn off the cam though.

as for R-R, Sh*treon doors and Rialto??!!?? Jeez, you need help, though your fetich for rusty chassied 1300s was bad enough

I guess you'd need a time for an example circuit to try and work out if its worth it - and i'm not aware of anyone ever doing a sprint in a 1300 (not since FOH - and that was running a full race crossflow)?

i think you'd need a refreshed 1300 to do a lap or two at Curbs with a compie at the wheel just to give a datum time.
i suspect that you'd need to pick your events too, certainly thats how Chris Eades played it with his very competitve bog standard 1600. He came close to winning the overall championship in the car. Somewhere like Shelsley Walsh is a power hill, few corners to make up time being agile, its all about grunt. Same goes for Goodwood and possibly Anglesey.
Curbs would be OK, as too would be Thoresby, probably Loton, Wiscombe (especially if wet!) and maybe even MIRA.
the other thing to note, which the SSSC handicap doesnt allow for, is the differential between wet & dry times. A 1300 wet time, is probably only 10% slower than its dry time, whereas a very powerful cars wet time will be up to 100% slower!! Ben Gough halved his time from wet to dry at Harewood Hillclimb in Big Bob a few years ago!
Given the weather this year, a good performance in wet weather could net you the championship!

stock 1300? forget it!

Gotta make use of the over square design and rev the knackers off it. Fully balanced bottom end with a suitabley capable top end, solid lifters, wild cam.

New one for the mix, Zetec head on a CVH 1300 bottom end?!

Add an external oil drain for the second camshaft area, and it SHOULD drop straight on. 1600 Zetec had woefully small valves though - do it with an 1800 or 2.0 head. No vernier cam pulleys needed either as they're friction locked.

RR, you are really an anarak :-) yes my exhaust was 'double S' one provided by QRG many moons ago! and a friend in need is a ruddy pest? :D
Richard, jack under sump??? I know it could do with a lick of paint but I only wiped the oil off the other side when doing a 'rebuild' and there is paint on drivers side more oil piddles down that side of engine  I guess it will get added to the list for this winter. not sure whether to SORN today or end of October

Right then having a think about exhaust options (rather thantrack times ? ) would it maybe be an option to consider 'stock' XR3i manifold as a replacement (RR found 'cheap' availables?) and then go down the 'remanufacture' of a 'bespoke' front pipe, nothing daft just a down pipe like I have (ish) and then a swept right angle aft with a pair of 135 to take thro chassis leg and meet up with 'standard' middle section. then folk can either go standard/big box/no box/straight thro?
I reckon using a sytem welded up from swept bends might be an option (tho no way to prove if that perm would work as I only have one, and SWAMBO would do her nut if fleet size was to increase  )

Alan -hope it didn't come across as a criticism

The worst culprits for sump jacking seem to be the tyre fitters. Before my car had its new springs a lot of 2-post lift arms wouldn't fit under the (non-galv)SS1 sills(might still not... ).They are also very wary of 25 year old sills/jacking points as well. So out comes the trolley jack and under the sump/diff it goes.
I always stick very close to the car in such situations and they take a fair bit of persuading that the sills are strong enough(having replaced them I know they are). :)

I think your suggestion is the way to go. My twin pipe idea is tempting but the lack of room, starter motor proximity and galv chasses with that extra ti engine mount would make a one size fits all very difficult.Bit bigger diameter, better flowing siamesed top would be just right compromise IMHO.
