Nightmare gearbox project

Post by DARK STAR » Thu Dec 10, 2015 9:30 pm

I've found out why Jacques Marmier was selling his GTE, and I can understand his emotions.
You may not understand much from the Google translation but I can assure you that failing to cure a gearbox problem over eighteen months is not as funny as it might sound.
Incidentally, Jacques is apparently as stubborn as me and now he has calmed down the car is not for sale and he has refused three potential buyers :)
If anyone comprehends enough to offer useful advice please go ahead, or if I can clarify any points ... :help:
Here goes ...

I take my courage in two hands to give you a feedback on my linking. I need to empty my bag because I no longer see the end to this box !!!
I am an expatriate and thought I could rest on my father who finally refused to touch it. I therefore do and everything comes back to me ca bcp more than expected! Ridiculously overpriced !!!

- January 2014: Purchase € 5,500 + € 850 repatriation Biarritz

- March 2014: Mechanics (setting rocker box bridge drain) = the garage with the car makes me walking back that does not pass (200 € the way) .I still decides to send him to paint ...

- June 2014 the BRG painting - € 2500, changed all joints, back belts, b post, flashing, backlight (750 €)

- September 2014 Auto Transmission: after several quotes all exorbitant (+ € 5,000 + refection poses) I entrust to the linking of knowledge for knowledge réfectionner the box. I recovered the car after nine months ..... no comment .... The reverse happens but the electricity was tinkered ... + gear lever switch problem. (Jy still leaves € 2,200)

- March 2015: I decide to send the car from an English specialist to control it all- wonder belts, poses new seats, Neiman change the barrels doors, spare engine oil - it also detects a leak the box and changes the pan gasket of the box (the passage € 1,000).

- May 2015: A friend got the car and I think I have finished. Well no! electrical problem! more elec dash! and HS cooling circuit.

- July 2015 - Specialist old electricity (€ 625) - Finally someone honest !!! overwhelmed and slow but honest! All the electricity is redone + new fan following and new stalk thermostat problem and vessel expansion) .I got the connecting end of August after one and a half site and think I can finally enjoy. I roll with a day and returned to the garage. The next day a huge oil spill on the ground. The box is still leaking .... I still rode one week by complement. My mecano tried time and again to screw the housing but the leak persists.
Bottom line the car comes to my € 14,000 and still leaking .... That's when the rage that I put the car up for sale.

After receiving dozens of lines of blow and listening to the advice of friends I decided to withdraw from sale because I am so close to the goal. I refused 2 or 3 visits. I was very surprised by the vehicle's success. I took my troubles patiently, left the car in the garage with a basin under the hood since September.

It is clear that today I want to continue to ruin me this auto box that I do not appreciate. I will consider even a complete engine conversion box for simplicity. RECOMMENDED that you? What donor vehicle? What overall cost?

- Ford Sierra 2.8 + box 5?
- Ford Essex 3L + box 5?
- ???

Or do I sell it to buy another manual ???

I'm interested councils and especially good Occases.

thank you beforehand
Jacques

PS makes me walking back that does not pass has something to do with reverse gear not working

Chris, please ask him to write it in French instead of this dreadful translation! I get that he has a leaky auto gearbox, but the rest is no use to any of us . If you don't want to take up space on this forum, how about a full French version on your website? Ican read & write French(so can Tanuki), and I am sure I can manage a better translation than this! :D
Ian.

French isn't forbidden on this forum (languages are mentioned in the Forum Rules and Guidelines) as it's commonly known that on-line translations can lose a lot of the meaning - in fact it is promoted to avoid such issues!

I wouldn't be surprised to find French/German etc in the Europe section at all..

I have read the original (french) story this morning in my emails ... I can post it tonight once I am back home
- yes, I am still using Thunderbird and storing emails on my PC ... so cannot access them from the outer world once they have been downloaded  -
Probably Chris will have put it in here before

- Janvier 2014 : Achat 5500 € + rapatriement Biarritz 850 €

Merci d'avance
Jacques

The upshot is pretty easy to decipher though - he's spent a fortune on it and the auto box leaks.

There's no indication as to the source, although the sump gasket has been replaced.

The questions at the end are:

1. Considering a conversion, what is recommended (complete donor car? and rough price?) - 2.8 Cologne with 5 speed or 5 speed conversion on the Essex?

2. Sell it and buy a manual GTE.

So - ignoring all of the preamble:

where is it leaking from?

Would he prefer a manual anyway (conversions are well discussed on here)

Why not simply replace the 3 speed auto with an overhauled unit (it's not like he's averse to spending money on it!)

Yes, my O-level French is a bit rusty, but as a general point, surely either a BW35 or a Ford C3 is a pretty unsophisticated, old-tech box, which was used in quite a number of other cars, so I would have thought it shouldn't be that difficult, either to get a competent repair, or a complete replacement. Unless I'm missing something, it sounds as though he's been badly-served by the garage(s) involved?

Yes, that's about it Jim.
All the oil seals have been changed and the 'box overhauled, I don't understand how it can still leak.
I have advised him to keep the car after all the effort (and money!) he has spent on it, after all he knows the rest of the car is good ;)
Likewise the Essex, and I have given him an outline of what is needed for the conversion, including Xavier's drawings for a bell-housing adapter plate.
He doesn't really like automatics so he may well go for the conversion.
One thing I'm not sure of, how does the back axle ratio compare for 3-speed auto and 5-speed manual ... ?

And yes, he has been very badly served by various garages, only the last auto-electrician being at all competent.

It sounds straightforward advice to me - get a manual 'box and clutch and swap over. Take a chance on the ratios and then have the speedo recalibrated if necessary. Sounds like he needs a good recon 'box as he will explode if the replacement leaks a drop! Ok hes got to bugger about with the console etc but that's just cosmetic stuff.

I do have a working (stated by the guy I bought it from) C3 auto box with converter. Not for free, but it needs to go soonish.

Perhaps it's the oil cooler or its connections leaking - they probably won't have been overhauled. Type 9 is a nice conversion but you'll need a pedal box (cable clutch), adaptor plate/expensive Bellhousing, etc.

Ah, hadn't thought about the oil cooler.
Is C3 a straight replacement, I don't know anything whatsoever about automatics?

Minor mods needed to fit the C3 I think?
