Interesting read - actually I stumbled over your thread last night. Maybe I should do something similar - one thread for "the life" here and another one for technical issues in the SE5 section...

Your starter problem (if I understood you correct) sounds like something I experienced yesterday with the bête. Short stop at the gas station to check tyre pressure and (oops!) forgot to turn off the lights (I have to see if I can rewire that they turn off with the ignition...). Tried to start the car, starter turned very slow and just for short time, then stopped. Sounded like a dead battery to me. Another try (hope dies last), same story. Oh no. Already on the phone to find some rescue, I decided to give the car a last chance - whoomp there it is! Just like nothing happened... evil!

I remember that when I was in stop-and-go traffic (at high outside temperatures) I stopped the engine sometime, and after the ~fourth time the starter sounded slow as well - thought it is due to the rather small batterie.

Now a colleague of mine tells me that this might have to do with the starter motor - if one of the field coils is dead and the starter is just not sitting in the right postion. Not sure how to check that, though.

Cheers
Jörg

That would be my guess, too. Sounds as though all our starters are dying of old age at the same time! :|

If like me you have difficulty finding a secondhand replacement, and you want to splash out on a new one, you will get a shock when you see the prices being quoted by our usual Scim suppliers. You can buy a new geared high-torque starter straight from the makers Eurolec, also known as Powerlite, for £165 plus P&P. Model N° RAC 407. You will need to rotate the mounting plate about 90° so that the motor is almost hoizontal relative to the crankcase. There is no 12V take-off for a ballasted coil, but that's not difficult to feed from elsewhere .EDIT: I've just realised, of course, that we are talking about a GTC - Cologne engine! Different starter mounting! I was talking about an Essex   !

Had problems with the starter on my modern Hyundai a couple of years ago where it became a lottery if it worked or not. Turned out to be burned contacts on the solenoid. Might be worth stripping it down to take a look?

not too sure why you're cross linking to the tech section of the main forum Chris? the other topic should really have been in project progress (with specific posts for tech questions/issues) but I've now created a European project section, so perhaps it can be moved here?

Sounds reasonable ;)

I'm sure you haven't finished but I looked this morning (well, it was this morning in San Diego) and the events report section only listed older Scimitar Sorties ...

You might have been looking while I was still working but no, it's not finished yet.
