MHIBA 2017- Success!

Post by Oldconn » Wed Aug 09, 2017 10:12 am

MHIBA is a handy abbreviation of Montée Historique International Ballon D'Alsace , which takes place this weekend: 11,12,13 August. Entries are full, the variety and quality are as good as last year, the weather forecast is good, so I am looking forward to a superb weekend. I had a big scare with "Candy" ,with just a week to go I thought I had blown the engine!
She has been rattling for a a few months( I think I need a new set of pistons or a replacement engine) then on Sunday I suddenly lost power, she started clanking and running on five cylinders and puffing out smoke. Creeping home in despair, I was seriously thinking about cancelling the trip to Alsace. I cancelled the booking at the camping site, and 'phoned round the local club members to cadge a seat in another car. On Monday I started to strip the engine, then just before lifting the cylinder heads I took out the spark-plugs and discovered one had completely lost its centre electrode! So a piece of steel and fragments of ceramic insulator must have been ingested and spat out . So, with a new plug in place I started it up again and it ran just as before, although smoking slightly from one bank. So my trip is on again, and I'm looking forward to what should be the best event of the year. There will be pictures!

MHIBA 2017- Scimiscare!

Good luck with the trip, and dare I ask, just out of interest, which plug manufacturer and type, and how long were they in the car?
I used to be heavily involved in Quality Assurance so I'm always interested in quality and reliability of components. :?

NGK BPR6ES, fitted less than a year ago. I have always used these in this car. This is only the second time I have experienced this type of failure, in 54 yrs of motoring. I guess I was just unlucky to get the one-in-a-million which failed.

MHIBA 2017- Success!

Post by Oldconn » Thu Aug 17, 2017 3:24 pm

Well, I made it there and back without a breakdown, and what an event! If last year was the baptism, this year was the confirmation. MHIBA has come of age, and is established as one of the foremost hillclimbs in France -competitive or not. Compared to last year, the organisation was bigger and more professional, the security measures were vastly improved, the schedule was tighter, the marshalling thorough and slick, and the overall impression was that the people in charge knew exactly what they were doing. It ran like a well-oiled machine! New spectator areas had been set up and cordoned off, there was audible public address everywhere, the start-line shifted further downhill, which added another bend and made the start far more interesting to watch; and the pre-start grid arrangement worked a treat, so that cars set off every 30 seconds without any delays , and four runs in the day were achieved exactly on schedule. Hats off to Jean-Pierre Munsch , the Course Directors, and their team of 200 marshals, secretaries, scrutineers,programme-sellers,first-aiders,security riders, breakdown crews, etc, etc.
The flat note for me was that I dare not risk blowing-up my sick engine, so the sole Scimitar(and sole British Entrant) had to sit on the sidelines in the paddock. However I was in good company , among the 150 or so runners and estimated 30-40 other interesting cars on show. Some superb machines turned up from six countries, including a Fiat 124 Sport all the way from Italy ; and 320 of us sat down together for the gala dinner on Saturday evening. I found myself on the top table, rubbing elbows with the Maires from St.Maurice and Bussang who had both supported and sponsored the event.Good conversation, very good food , and some surprise honours on the stage for six stalwarts of French motor sport. I was surprised and delighted to see Christine Beckers from Belgium, whom I remember from her exploits in the 1970's. If you don't recognise the name, look her up on the internet, she is arguably the most successful lady-driver around ,ranking alongside Michelle Mouton.
Hundreds of photographs can be seen on Facebook and elsewhere, and since this is the Sabre & Scimitar forum I won't overload the cart with a lot of pictures of other marques; but here are a few "snaps"from my smartphone of some of the most interesting, featuring(naturally) the best of the British:

Lovely, Ian, well done!

Is that a Nathan as in Nathan-Costin (looks like Costin bodywork), they are somewhat rare even in England.
The swiss Riley is wonderful, too.
I'll have a look on t'interweb for more marvels ....

And here's a golden photo opportunity spoiled by being jostled in the crowd - René Arnoux autographs Christine Beckers' helmet:

The Jaguar Mk2 was entered by Phillipe Renault, a name to conjour with, who has owned it from new. At the age of 82, he is talking about renewing his Competition Licence next year, and starting up again with his son in a Dodge Viper!

The Lotus Elite Sebring took third place at Sebring in (Ithink) 1960. Original Climax engine sounded great!
