Next morning bright and early we had a large breakfast and I decided to investigate the first signs of trouble on the trip. Our car having lost a cylinder at one point was emitting white-ish smoke from the right hand exhaust. The right rear plug was nasty oily looking, so I cleaned it and we all set off for Mont Ventoux, 2000 metres high. The GTC got up with no problem, mostly on six cylinders, but the second and third problems manifested themselves, Fred Rambert's car being very reluctant to start after a petrol halt (and subsequently) and Viv's boiling up a treat half way.

Mont Ventoux is magic, luckily the weather was clear when we arrived at the stony summit (well above the tree-line) and we could see for many kilometres. The cloud descended suddenly and we couldn't even see the observatory 100 metres away, that's how it is on the Ventoux. Going down the other side I didn't engine-brake too much to avoid pulling oil into the duff cylinder - and boiled the brakes, which is not amusing with 5 or 6 km of 12% hill still to go. We stopped (with difficulty) at the first café we saw to let everything cool off. Most of the others went on to Bedoin for a light lunch at the Escapade as arranged.

Fred and Viv limped by and stopped to help, but when I tried the cooled brakes they were ok, so they went on to Bedoin. We decided to head for home while the car was still running, and made it on 5½ cylinders, which helped to avoid breaking the speed limit.

Great pics Fred, received also by WeTransfer, thanks.
I really will get the 'official' report out soon ...

Incidentally Fred Hermand also had a slight overheating problem on the Ventoux, but topping up sorted it and he completed his 1 400 MILE tour without further trouble.
And Viv blew another head gasket on the way to Lyon, I first commented that I will probably need to change two but he only has one ... well, one at a time anyway.

Looking forward to it

I have just checked the mileage on Custard ... that was exactly 1300 miles, way less than the planned 2000+
Good to know that Fred & Brownie made a safe trip back home. I must admit that apart from the heating issues, Brownie is driving superb - I sometimes could hardly follow her on the mountain roads :? -

We stopped counting those gaskets ... I have received one from Nigel at my office on Monday, but will have to ship it back to Viv
since we managed to hand-make a copper gasket for Kinky over the week-end, eh eh

Cheers,
Fred

It will be handy for next time

Here at last is the 'official' report suitably reduced - the pdf file is 37,4mb so I don't know how I am going to send it to Terry for Slice.
This is presumably because all the photos are huge HD files, I did change my camera to SD but it seems to have changed back again.
I could of course reduce the photos but that would mean starting all over again

I should mention, for anyone that read that far, the french version is NOT yet on ScimitarFrance, but it will be (hopefully) when the article appears in Slice.

Thanks Trevor and Fred, are you sure the pdf will decompress in a printable (as in printing press) format?

I should also thank all the photographers involved in the production!
Josette Boulmier, Fred Rambert, Jörg Schumbert (and me).

A PDF is OK for high quality printing as long as you've generated it correctly. You really need to ask editor for the specs he needs. Ideally you need to include printers marks - thus slightly oversize paper, the correct color profile - cmyk etc and embed all fonts.
