Cheltenham resto/rebuild...PIC HEAVY!!

Post by speedy555 » Tue Nov 22, 2011 11:05 pm

I bought this Cheltenham Sable Caravan from Phil Howard as a bit of a project a little while back (2 months ish), and although not quite finished, as the soft furnishings need doing, I thought I'd share it with you all :D
As usual with these things, you end up spending double the money you expected, and triple the time  .... Nowhere near an exhaustive list, but has had the cooker fixed, a new fire, new window rubbers & ledges, door handles, new lights, bodywork / resealing & repaint, all the wood revarnished, re-plated hinges inside, 240v charging system fitted, corner steadies repaired, brakes sorted, front inner panel rebuilt, and so much more Ive forgotten!!
Despite its 1960's look, this is acyually a 'fernden' cheltenham sable, and is a 1980 model. The original company went bust in '76 (IIRC) and 'fernden' bought the stuff and built them from 1980-82. Despite going back to using quality materials and all hand built (Mine has the bloke who built its name & date signed behind one of the wall panels) needless to say they would have been out of date even in 1980, so didnt sell too many or last very long (Mine is chassis no.2, and was built in July!!!)

Anyway, some 'before' pics....

I have a forum member interested in a possible purchase, and maybe 1 other, so typical of me to just get to the finishing post and move on :) Though if nothing comes of it, I expect it will be worth more in the spring, so may keep it a bit longer.
Shame I havent a suitable scim myself to put it behind :(

Thanks - Think I need to tow it about somewhere so it can be seen, instead of hidden on a farm! lol

I will Jim. One person wants it as it is - i.e. still needing carpets, and ideally the seats recovering. Curtains are being made as we speak. I reckon It will be worth a few hundred more in spring/summer, but a sale is a sale, and if I get my money back on her then its not so bad. I will let you know what happens. If it was a 4 berth Id be keeping it, but kidded myself that a 2 berth would be ok.....Have enjoyed doing it though!

Ive no doubt it will sell, its just to who, when, and how much! Considering its never been advertised theres fair interest in her even in the off season.

Looks good Dave, you've done a great job of restoring it without losing it's classic period charm. :D

Got to say well done, Dave - its just the job the old girl deserved.

Daren't show the pics to the wife - she might decide we have to buy it back...and have already agreed to its replacement!

Got the carpet fitted today, and the curtains back - Not all fitted yet but looks much better with something at the windows...Wants a couple of blinds at the back, and thats it. Then either try and sell it before xmas, or wait for the prices to rise! I do like it though - was freezing cold at work today, but I was all snug with the fire on in the caravan :D
