6a cutting out

Post by rebel alliance » Sun Jan 19, 2020 5:08 pm

So decided to move it 4 miles to a mates garage today...ran it for about 30 mins on idle, started cutting out and refusing to start as i drove it out of the garden.Thinking it may be out of fuel bunged 2 gall in started up again got a mile then it popped banged nearly died..stopped for 5 min ok again 1/2 mile from garage died coughing white smoke out of carb ,trying to start if it did would not rev just died again. So took carb apart jets clear fuel in bowl that took 15 min it then started and ran ok..got to garage died again found coil a bit hot poured cold water over it restarted fine...would a good guess be coil or ballast resistor knackered

Ballast resistors don’t go short circuit, so won’t be that. They either have their specified or infinite resistance.

Water in the fuel maybe?

My similar problem turned out to be the capacitor that had degraded. Fortunately I could park within the cones of one of those wonderful motorway repair areas in the outside lane! Cooled down and on my way to reach the next service station and a nice RAC man with a spare. (I should say I was in my 1930s Austin Special withA35 BMC 'A' engine" :)
