Hi folks. It has taken me a while to find the source of my rough idle. Spraying some gas under the thermostat housing causes a change of engine note and will make it cut out if i spray enough. So it seems when i did the head/inlet manifold gasket a while back it did not seal correctly.
I was very careful when fitting with plenty of sealant aroud all the ports but i never got the inlet manifold skimmed when the heads were done so I assume this is the cause of it not seating very well. The heads may have been skimmed before.

My question is where on the inlet manifold do you skim?
Is it all gasket faces or just at the bottom indicated here in red?
How much should be removed.

Did you remove any bits of head gasket which can sometimes stick out on the four corners

I don’t use sealant around the ports - just the front and rear faces you’ve marked. Pretty sure that’s what the manual advises too?

Do you think sealant could cause the leak?

I see this comment in another thread that relates to the cologne engine. Is it the same for the essex?

What you do need to be careful of with the Ford V6's when skimming the heads is the sealing of the inlet manifold. As the heads move closer to the block then the "space" occupied by the inlet manifold actually grows so it maybe that you will need to have some material skimmed off the botttom mating faces of the inlet manifold (where it mates to the block - not the heads), this is even more relevant if the heads you are using have been skimmed already.

Another thought on head skimming and gaskets.
I once had a Bristol with strait 6 engine that blew a head gasket between 2 cylinders. I stupidly drove it home on the remaining 4 cylinders and caused a considerable burn furrow between the 2 cylinders. I phoned Bristol motors at Filton to ask what the minimum combustion chamber was allowed and the chief engineer quoted the figure there and then. He advised how much could be skimmed off and said just make a new gasket in solid copper that is that much thicker........I did that and motoring happily continued. I don't recall there being much difficulty in making the gasket, but then I was much younger in those days.

Limit is of course, as said, thickness to waterways.......I have a faint recollection that has been spoken about and a rough figure quoted elsewhere?
