hi all-how can i easily tell the early v6 head from the later ones for purchasing please?

my newly purchased scimitar has a puff of blue smoke from nearside exhaust once warm particularly coming off idle[pulling away in traffic]

if you lift off gas at speed say 80 ish -let engine drag for say 3-4 seconds then floor it there is no smoke-this leads me to think its head/guide/valve stem oil seal related

car has reputedly done very low miles at 14500 or so -been laid up a lot so possibly just seals but wouldnt mind a pair of heads to refurb and fit given worst case scenario

if i pull the heads and its just one or two guides thats no biggie either i will just get an engineering shop to change it and the valve/s

If it’s a pre-72(ish) engine, then they have oval inlet ports. 72-on have D shaped inlet ports.

Another one to put in the mix is low and high compression heads - high compression (car) heads only have the recess around the valves and spark plug; low compression (transit/industrial engine) have the recess across pretty much the whole of the bore area.

does anybody have a link to an in situ valve spring compressor[cost effective] that works-save me messing around making one
burton have one around a tenner-but almost same again postage
plenty cheapo ones for just over a fiver but what works-anybody?

Got mine from a club person ( bought in the the USA ) worth the money no matter what it costs - be sure to blank off the oil drain holes ( with rags works ) just in case you drop a valve retainer etc. Smoke at idle or on start up is a sign that the stem seals need replacing - on overrun piston rings.

If you do this job in situ then make sure the valve does not drop into the cylinder

Feed a lot of string into the cylinder then turn the piston up to stop the valves dropping, then just wind it back down and pull the string out.
Only other way would be to put compressed air into the cylinder.
Both methods work so long as your careful.

My valves just stayed where they were - no need for anything to keep them up but I did make sure the pistons were up so if they did drop it was not far and they could be pulled back easily

i have used both methods on previous cars-the v6 looks as though it could lend itself to the rope method fairly easily.
its not the end of the world pulling the heads off either-just more time and cleaning of gasket surfaces,plus while you are there it would be prudent to do both heads

will report back on my £6.odd valve spring in situ tool and its performance
