How to check if eureka wire is present?

Post by nickm » Wed Jul 24, 2019 10:34 pm

I am checking the ignition system on the se5 and wondering if the ballast/eureka wire is still present.
I put a voltmeter on the LT coil connections[ and earthed the -ve side] and am getting 6 volts with the ign on
but the engine not running.
Does that sound about right for a ballasted system?
Nick

It feeds 12 volts to a six volt coil on start only .then runs through the Eureka to reduce it to six volts

I thought it seemed a bit low as well.
I have a 9v ballast coil fitted.
Could that cause a poor spark at low revs?

If you have a 9 volt coil then you will need 9 volts . I assumed you were using a 6 volt coil .

What you are all forgetting is that there is a dwell involved. The points are neither always closed nor always open. Therefore what is important is the average voltage presented to the coil. You need to measure that with an analogue meter with the engine running. I would expect to see a lower voltage with the points closed and engine off.
