My carb is running a bit lean, and even with the idle screws turned out 3 1/2 turns the plugs are too white. I had a look at the idle jets and found that they are unlike the ones I'm familiar with - different shapes although both are marked 45. Does anyone know what carb this is (so i can order parts) as I can't find any id marks on it.

Looks like a Weber 38 to me but the experts will be along shortly. I've just replaced my idle jets with new ones bought from Classic Carbs UK. Part numbers are 74403.45 and 74409.45...

Hi, thanks for that, that's exactly what i need to know. I've had a look at their site, the images of idle jets match both the numbers you give and the jets I've got.

Yes, later model 38. If you are lean, wind the screws out a bit more. Many cars run at around four turns out.

Many thanks AJL, I'll give that a try before doing anything rash. This 'different sizes/shapes' idle jets is a new one on me, I've had a few Scimitars over the years and this is the first time I've seen anything other than the two identical idle jet set up.

So that is two different shaped idle jets in the one carb?

Certainly is. The carriers are slightly different each side too.
