Have you checked the starter relay for power yet? It’s behind the glove box on a 6 series/GTC.

Am I inhibited ?

Post by Korporal brunhausen » Mon Jul 29, 2019 11:42 am

thanks Scimjim, I hadn't got that far cos I couldn't make any progress with the r/inhibitor due to access probs. there's power in the wire to it.
I've now done the starter relay as you suggested and the relay functions and there is power there. I think I'll look at the solenoid next. I still have the r/inhibitor prob to sort, I can't even get the lead back on!
Can you confirm that I am right in assuming that the order of things is the ignition switch, inhibitor, starter relay, starter relay ,solenoid relay, and solenoid itself?
Many thanks all.

Wiring diagram here

Order is: Ignition switch, starter relay, starter solenoid. The inhibit/reverse switch provides an earth to the starter relay when it’s in the correct position (neutral or park) so if you don’t have the plug on it, the starter relay shouldn’t energise.

If the plug is off just short the pins out this should eliminate the inhibitor switch .make sure it's in neutral because if it fires up the car will start moving .

I think it’s a 3 pin switch as it’s the reverse switch too, so you have to short the correct two 😀

Am I inhibited ?

Post by Korporal brunhausen » Mon Aug 19, 2019 10:24 am

I've had a.bit RNR from my non cranking SE6 by tidying up the engine bay, time well spent etc. The immobiliser is the Thatcham approved Autowatch 239 TI which appears to be functioning normally, BUT when I Googled this I found some reference to symtoms the same as I've got. When they came to start they couldn't get the starter to turn.....
Has anyone ever had this prob with a scim?
Meanwhile, with newly reacquired enthusiasm, I'm working my way back thro those 40 odd year old wires more thoroughly with the hope of more progress.
Also, has anyone any idea of which two of the three wires on the inhibitor ( or red/ white , green and green/brown) I would need to short out to bypass it?

MAny thanks for all the help thus far.

MY NON TURNING SE6 HAS TURNED AT LAST!!! SHOCK HORROR.
I did this by bypassing the reverse safety switch and the solenoid wiring etc ( low voltage on the White/red wire) to get temporarily mobile to get to a garage to investigate the cause of the starting probs.
Can anyone confirm just what wires on the safety switch have to be shorted ?

Many Thanks

Looking at the wiring diagram, you need to Earth the red/white at the inhibit switch. This powers the starter relay, which sends power to the starter solenoid (brown to brown/red) when you turn the key.

Thanks Jim, as usual I have been doing things wrongly.
I've decided it might be a good idea to replace the neutral safety switch, but looking round the electric interweb (!) there doesn't seem to be much to see,but I'm probably just looking in all the wrong places as usual. Do you have any ideas pl?

Regards
John B.

Do you mean an alternative to the existing reverse/neutral switch, or a source for originals?

Hi Jim, my intention is to replace the switch with a new one. I 'm not having much luck searching for the replacement. Out of curiosity, is there an alternative ??

Never heard of anyone fitting an alternative, although I don’t think I’ve ever heard of one failing either? Have you tried the club traders? I’m sure there will be plenty of s/h ones available if you put a wanted ad out.

I have changed a few over the years.
Jim they do fail, but the hardest part is getting the astard off, they use an ally washer to seal the casing and tend to be very tight.

John I`m surprised you can`t find any on line, they fit a lot of Fords.
