GTC upper ball joint

Post by Dennis Nicholas » Mon May 06, 2019 6:25 pm

Hi all
ref. upper ball joint on top of vertical link and between upper wishbones. at least on one side mine has rubber boot split badly.....not sure yet if ball joint is otherwise good(kept well greased). Can you still get the boot and securing rings?

Looking at prices and types there seems to be quite a variation and some without a grease nipple !
ebay several doing QH QSJ100s but seem to have no nipple £16.99 single and £29.99 pair:
Also other QH part numbers seen for apparent same items?
Jumblemaster £14 pair but look to be without nipple...+ postage.
Reliant parts (Reliant parts book 212822) £27.99 free postage.

ANG Classic car parts pair £23.05 inc vat and post (but oddly buy them singly and 2 comes to £22.48 inc vat and post!!
Looks like the ones to go for? Has anyone used these and are they ok?

Does anyone know of a source of just the rubber boots and clips for these ball joins.....one side of mine is rotted out boot but think ball joint ok as has been kept well greased with Molly grease. (Moss showing TR6 boot but clip-ring no longer available.

Just started front wishbone bush renewal but one thing leads to another.........little progress because now only 7 months after 1st hip ball joint replacement and 7.5 weeks after 2nd one replaced and am feeling a bit sore after Saturdays start on the job!!!!.......looks like being a full front overhaul - car not me.

I bought set of various sizes on ebay - a search will find them - seem good quality and cheaper than buying a new ball joint

Sample of various sizes in boot 8 if they come without springs you can always fit them in place with thin cable ties. https://www.balljointboots.co.uk/

Alternatively, Tony Idle always spoke highly of this company - Bailcast, who make very flexible neoprene rubber ones

Peter and Roger....thanks for the references.....another page added to the spares list files.

I have just found a new set of ball joints (I thought I had some in the spares shelf) BUT they are the type without grease nipples.....they are in a box with GW stickers.......HuH.....not impressed.

Last time I walked aroind Graham Walkers store room there was a crate of them - all with grease nipples, so I would recomend buying 2 from GW.

Peter Have you tried the boot 3 on ball joint? I have measured large top seating to be 35mm (so that ok but small tapered peg is around 18.5mm just at the point it goes into vertical link so quite a stretch for a 12.5 mm hole (the boot taken off has an 18mm hole).

There are a number of Co's that sell a selection of boots - I'm not sure that the selection I bought was from the Co that I gave the example of. Not had any problems fitting a new boot but cannot remember if I have done a top ball joint.

QRG and Walkers both sell the rubber boots as separate items, I bought some at curbs the other year, useful to have on stock so to speak
