Reconditioned gearbox se5a

Post by toolmanchris » Mon Feb 18, 2019 3:12 pm

Can anyone give me a ball park figure as to the cost of a reconditioned 4 speed box for my 5A please.
I think the overdrive is ok but the box grumbles like a hungry bear lol
Its not bad once in 4th but getting there is noisy.
Also leaks oil like a siv (front oil seal I think)

If anyone can reccomend a supplier/ fitter that would be better still ;-)

Thanks

Reconditioned gearbox se5a

A previous owner had a firm called Robsport International supply and fit a reconditioned gearbox to my car in 2016. The gearbox cost £550 plus £90 for carriage but with a new slave cylinder, pipework and changing the sump gasket the final bill was was an eye watering £1,934 before VAT.

I reconditioned a Land Rover gearbox last year and having found how easy that was, I would always recondition one myself.

£550 is rediculously cheap IMHO - Robsport have a good reputation but there can’t be any profit in that? Even with the correct tools and experience, add a few new parts, cover a percentage of the overheads, plus VAT and some profit?

£1k for labour to fit the box is where they are making the money they lost on the box.

Actually just been speaking to Nigel at QRG and he recons a reconditioned box is roughly £1K plus VAT.
Thats all new internals though I think.

I might have a go at it - never done a box before.
The change is actually very smooth with no balking or grinding or much slop in the lever its just noisy so I suspect worn bearings.

Hope to get away with bearings and seals perhaps?

It's always a tricky one to give a sensible figure for a reconditioned gearbox - or anything else come to that. It all depends on what was found to be wrong with it when dismantled. I had never heard of Robsport before I saw the history of my car and I wouldn't like them or anyone to think I was discrediting them in any way. The LR gearbox I rebuilt only needed £117 in parts. I think they bought in the recon box because of the carriage charge. The one obvious advantage you have when doing it yourself is that you can decide what can go back in and what needs replacing.

People say all new internals probably mean new bearing , seals and other bits , but not new gears .

Chris I can put forward Stephen Brear gearboxes in Leeds.
They been doing Ford boxes for at least 30 years.

Don`t know if they would do the removal and refit though as I have only ever taken full boxes to them. :?:

I also still have a couple of Factory Rebuilt OD units for sale

And a couple of complete units removed from running cars :W
