GTE Engine & Gearbox Removal

Post by housemartin » Sun Nov 18, 2018 5:45 pm

Evening,
Given your widespread experience, is it easier to remove the gearbox and engine as a complete unit or separately?
I have an engine hoist, but have always removed one or the other never both at the same time.
Just wondered if it is possible and how easy it is to keep it balanced and if it was quicker.
Any links photos greatly appreciated
Cheers
Dan

I've done it both ways and always found it easier to lift engine and gearbox together, I do have a big engine crane though.

On a GTE you'll need the front of the car to be raised a bit to stop the bottom of the gearbox grounding out. If you've only got a small / standard size engine crane you may struggle to take both out at once.

Can't help with photos as the only pictures I seem to have were taken while lifting a straight 6 coupé engine.

GTE Engine & Gearbox Removal

I did an engine gearbox removal last week and with advice from all here it was so easy with a crane. I had the whole car up on axle stands, but you only need to do the front, then when engine and box had come up and forward so pulley is about an inch from bonnet catch, I took the stands out and dropped the car to its wheels which enabled moving the car backwards with plenty of clearance....nothing touched. I did find it easier to move the car as trying to move the crane with engine/box started it swinging. All done on my own. I made up a hanger plate for the carb bolts which canted the engine perfectly. If you want pics shout.

If your using a lifting hoist, the type on wheels, you need to make sure the reach is sufficient, the engine is a long way back.

A two tonne crane that has extensions down to 1/2 tonne is fine. Half tonne is ample to lift and reach is fine.

GTE Engine & Gearbox Removal

Guys,
That is fantastic.
Especially the photos.
I will set about making a plate for carb bolts.
It amazes me that 4 bolts can support such a weight.
I also like the idea of rolling the car back rather than the crane.
Nice scimitar rocker covers.
Cheers

Good luck with your engine out, certainly easier putting back in one piece! The rocker covers came from robin rew when he modded the engine for me many years ago so don't know if any more still around. I'm going to polish them back up as I don't know why someone painted them whilst car was out of my ownership.
