SE5A gearchange linkage

Post by Oldconn » Thu Nov 15, 2018 9:53 am

Some pics here for Zeb, and anybody else who has the type 5 gearbox(two rods):
This what the bottom end of your gearlever looks like: If the black plastic cap is broken or missing, you will certainly be experiencing the "pudding-stirrer" syndrome.

There should be plastic bushes on the ends opf the two rods - two like this one , and a different type on the front end of the other rod .

Here you can see how the plastic slider is supposed to run in the curved slot

The big pivot bolt would have had a nylon bush originally. Mine was won out, so I made a new one from a piece of copper tube . Well greased, it has lasted for three years. The little screw on the side of the eye is to lock the bolt -if that is missing , the bolt can work its way out , leaving you with suddenly no gears!

Did you know that the grub screw position is different between Coupe and GTE when the same gearbox is fitted

And early boxes had a nipple on the large through bolt, to attach a spring that centres the stick in neutral.

I strongly suspect that Zeb has a 3 rod box too.

Thanks for the tip and the photos, it something I will have to check.
@scimjim, what do you call an early box? When have they changed? Mine has indeed a strong spring to put the stick in front of the 3-4 row in neutral.

changed from LH type overdrive on type 5 box, to J type overdrive on hybrid box in 1973 - your gearstick suggests later box.

Don Kennedy's article on upgraging the 3-rod linkage on the later type box (if that's what you have) can be found here
