If you decide to re-con the engine and its a early Essex don't fit new tappets - the early tappets are no longer available and if you fit the later tappets over 70 the engine smokes rather a lot. The PO of my Coupe fitted the later tappets and I drove around for three years below 70 not realising what would happen above 70 - James Bond does not get a look in.

The original engine is a front bowl sump type but I think it is a later type with the later type tappets.
I will take the cam out of it and make sure it is the same as the one in my "new" engine.

Here are the two types - put the later ones in the earlier engine and so much oil goes into the rocker box it cannot drain back to the sump quick enough and its ends up being drawn into the carb via the rocker breather.

Check the bolts holding the camshaft retaining plate behind the timing gear while you have it apart. They were both loose in my car and one had come out half a dozen turns!

Took a piston out and it has pretty nasty scuffing below the gudgeon pin.
I suspect the rest will be the same.
The rings look fine.
Looking at getting the Car Clinic to do me a rebuild when I have saved up enough!
