Right I now have it running. Or did on Monday so goodness know whether it will in future as I dont know what I did. I earthed the dizzy backplate, replaced cap (again) and managed to get it idling.

When it stops raining I'll take it out in circular motions for as long as it takes to get hot, and see if I break down. If it cuts out I'll take a can of carb cleaner and see if it'll fire and a volt meter to see the voltage to coil, and a phone for the AA.

Classic coil (or ignition module) failure symptoms.
I think (hope) you may have been right there. Expect an update to confirm after the weekend.

After a long time doing everything to combat fuel vapourisation including wrapping manifolds, changing the fan, changing the thermostat, replumbing, fitting a fuel return, relocating the pressure regulator and coil, and some stuff I cant even remember now, it was...

....

Failed ignition module.

Its still a bit rough running but that can be sorted - most importantly it doesn't cough and come to a standstill after 20 mins, or backfire and die, or stop when hot and not start.

Bingo!
