Problem with my automatic gearbox

Post by Eric2205 » Mon Sep 04, 2017 9:28 am

Hello,

When I step backwards (gear lever : 'R') the rear lights switch on but the car doesn't move
Do you have an idea of what is happening and what can I do?

GTE SE5a 1972

Regards

Check gearbox oil level first.

Then if oil level and condition are OK, the fault is a common one of 1st/Reverse servo seals. I would guess that it takes a while to go into 1st gear as well? I stock the kits, or I can do the job for you.

No problem, I can sent you the kit, or even come over to do the job, if you can afford it. ;-)

Problem with my automatic gearbox

Ah, just realised that this is going to be a BW35 which I have less knowledge of. I *think* that the cable adjustment is critical on those. If that and the oil level don't sort it, I will do some research for you.

Problem with my automatic gearbox

Thank you for all these suggestions for help, it's really fun.
For now the car is in the garage of a friend mechanic in Rouen: during a rally the car heated and I preferred to go back by train ...
This friend will look at why the car heated and moving the car he found the problem of reverse.
in function I will need the parts, to work on the box I will do it with my friend if he wants to learn to work on a box
What's on is that I'll tell you the rest

Nicked from another forum...

As for the loss of Reverse, check the linkage, and if that's OK then you really need to do a roadtest, and if during that you find you've lost TOP gear as well as reverse, then thats a rear clutch fault which is most likely to be a box out repair. If you find that you have TOP and you've lost REVERSE only then it's a rear band fault, which if it's the adjustment or a servo fault it can be cured with the box in-situ, but if it's the band itself then it's box out to fix it.

hi,

Can you advise me a type of oil to refill my gearbox?
Another question: is the control of the oil level of the gearbox engine on or engine off ?

Engine idling during level check and mineral oil to Ford spec F/G. DO NOT let anyone talk you into a Dexron fluid, it will destroy your gearbox.
